If you're video card has a tv out, just get an s-video cable for $10 to hook your pc up to your tv.

i'd prefer to spend as little as possible... i am going to get a p.c. from dell... i was told that it wouldn't look that bad on my t.v. which supports s-video.. my t.v. has an s-video input... the guy at best buy said that only the text would look crappy. and i use the library computers for now.

Well, if you trust the guy and Best Buy, then by all means go for it. The thing to consider is that you will have to run in 640x480 resoluion. Try that on a computer and see what you think.

What??? I thought it was 800x600, and even THAT is bad. There's no way I would ever settle for a resolution like that (640x480), especially on a big tv.

Okay, so how do I hook up my Comcast Cable TV to my notebook PC and my new source so I don't have to buy a TV to watch the news and configure the setup menus on the DVD machine? Costs??

The problem using a TV as a monitor is a tv has a piss poor resolution (unless you get an HDTV which defeat the purpose of saving money) you won't be able to read anything unless you used very large font and a low resolution. For example the forum is barely readable on medium font at 640X480( it hurt to read more than a minute) but I put my tv out at 800X600 I have to change the setting to largest to be able to read anything. So the video card may be able to output at higher reolution but your TV won't be able to do anything with it.

As for watching cable on computer you need a card with a TV turner. For a laptop you probably need someting external with USB TV turner. I don't have one so I can't recommand any particular model.

You can find TV's with vga support, that might work. As for HDTV, it is coming down in price. I just purchased a Samsung TXN2730F, which is not advertised as HDTV, but with some changes in the service menu, it becomes a HDTV, 1080pi. Not bad for 450.00. Well worth the purchase price.

what cable company you have has little to do with your notebook.

Get a tv tuner for your laptop.
Hook up your cable wire and you are set.
For DVD you will need to get a tuner that also has video inputs.
(composite or svideo)

Do a google search for laptop TV tuners and you will find all the pricing info you need.
