I've read that the Dt880s are "semi-open" which supposedly reduces the amount of sound the leak compared to a fully open headphone.

Does anyone have any experience on how true this is? Are they quiet enough to use in a quiet room with someone reading 5 feet away?

Thanks

No matter what any poster postulates - the person reading 5 feet away will always be the one with the final judgement.

They're light years better than the grados for sound leakage, but they still leak lots of music. You'll need to go closed/IEM for that kind of listening.

On my DT990, at the volumes I listen to stuff, I can't hear it 5 ft away, let alone 3 ft. This is playing death metal, like Hate Eternal. As you're already aware, the DT990 is open. This is in a house with double paned windows closed and nobody around. If it's in a soundproofed room, where the white noise is significantly lower (no street noise, etc.), you may be able to hear it.

The question is how loud do you listen to stuff. If you go to this quiet place, take off your headphones and put it on a table and walk away, can you hear it or not?

i did a quick little test between the Audio Technica AD500, Sennheiser HD580 (w/ hd600 grills), and Beyerdynamic DT880: I put them one at a time on my thigh, making sure of a good fit, then played the same part of a song after matching volumes out of my go-vibe v5 (12 o'clock on the v5's volume dial)...

...the dt880 was the quietest of the three, with the ad500's leaking significantly more than the HD580 & DT880.

In a perfectly quiet room, you could probably tell what kind of music the person with DT880's on is listening to from about 5-10ft away. Mind you, that's in a perfectly quiet room. I'd say about 15-20 feet for the AD500's, just for comparison.
