I currently have ipod 5th gen> LOD> ibaso t2> pk1

I am sort of skeptical on how much better it would sound going to something like...

imod> LOD> tomahawk/a Dr. Xin amp> pk1 (and westone 3 when it comes out)

files would be ranging from 320 mp3 to flac.

Should I dive in and do it?

I am mostly skeptical about the amps. I believe the source upgrade would make the most difference (that and the westone 3).

Im assuming he would want another amp since the other 2 amps listed are much superior amps to the one he has now. To Nothingpoetic, I'd go ahead and do it. An iMod video, ALO line out, tomahawk/Dr. Xin and Westone 3 is (without going custom) probably the very best possible portable setup you can get as of right now.

Amp later down the road. And westone 3 when it comes out.

If you read this forum constantly it can always get much better. If you don't, not really that much.

I know it can get better, but portables are more limited.

If i was going for a home set-up, I know I could always expect more.

But you still do have a pretty sweet rig. Are there any specific faults you hear with it? Sometimes you can start there and then narrow down what might be the culprit.

Well, not to be critical... but not exactly right now - more like sometime in the undetermined future

Well I don't have a very good reference point. The best I have is the pk1 and ms1. And my dad's 2 channel vintage Klipsch system.

I have this perfect sound in my head which I am trying to find.

I wish I could demo a lot of stuff, but that's hard when local stores don't carry imods or Rays & Xin's amps.

Trial and error I guess.

Cool, yeah, so I think it's instructive to ask what about your "perfect sound" is different from the sound you're getting. Then everyone's suggests might become more meaningful, in theory.

I'd say my perfect sound is a warmer than what I am getting now. I want deeper bass that is punchy but doesn't overpower the rest of the spectrum. The mids would be the strong point. I want shivers down my spine when I hear the vocals. And the highs would be sparkly but not to the point where it becomes fatiguing.

I actually don't want a huge soundstage. I want it to be more intimate than that. But I don't want it to be flat ether.

Might not be able to get that from an IEM but maybe if I move up the grado line I can find what I am looking for, or maybe I can try the D2000/5000.
