How Much Better are HD 580s with Replacement Cables?

I have a pair of Senn 580s on the way, and I am already wondering if I am going to need to upgrade the cables. I really don't want to lay out $100+ for cables on a set of cans that will have cost me ~$150.

Do people really think it makes a major improvement over the stock cables, or does it "depend" mostly on the quality of the system being used?

If you want a "big" difference (while still retaining the Sennheiser house sound), upgrade to the HD650. The replacement cables are not gonna do that, not even close. I recently took the Cardas cable off my 600 and the Zu Mobius off my 650 for ergonomic reasons, and I've been enjoying the sound of both despite the stock cables. The 600 still sounds like a 600 and the 650 still sounds like a 650.

Headphone cables are near the bottom of the list of things to replace in your system. Worry about buying a good amp, and source, before worrying about cables.

Thanks guys, that makes sense. I have the pocket amp V2, but I was planning on an upgrade (who isn't?) anyway. It sounds like I should use the money on that first, and then maybe go for a cable upgrade down the line.

Good choice! I didn't mention it in my post, but I agree with the other guys that an amp upgrade would also offer a decent return on investment (not as much as going to the 650, but then there's a chance you might actually prefer the sonic signature of the 580). I would definately audition the 650 before dropping $100+ on a cable, though.

Definitely depends on the quality of the system first...just because you're not going to notice all the fine details of a recable if you're feeding your headphones crap to begin with. If you like your 580s, then upgrade source or amp.
