How many HD DVDs do you own?

None. I'm waiting for the war to stop and HDTV to solidify alltogether.

Less than 10% of cable is HD. None is 1080p. Most is upconverted DVD 480i.
HDMI 'handshake' problems.
No next-gen audio over HDMI.
Still no 'wallpaper TV' technology promised 10 years ago.

I have none. I'll wait 'till the winning player/movies get cheaper.

If anything I see myself owning Blu-Ray titles in the future.

Handshake problems was somewhat of a problem with the first gen Toshiba player.. Now it's very rare..

Yes. There is next gen audio over HDMI.. Also, you can get the next gen audio through 5 analog outs in Toshiba's first gen model, & their flagship model..

I have 4 so far. King Kong, Batman Begins, Seabiscuit and V for Vendetta. Looking to add some import titles like Mr & Mrs Smith (not available on Blu-ray

)

If you're looking to add to your collection, Frys has 4 HDs for $11.99 (Troy, Unforgiven, V for Vendetta and Scanner Darkly)

No, the player decodes the track into PCM and then sends that over the HDMI. And using analog cables defeats the whole purpose of the 'one wire' HDMI connector.

If they were going to stick us with PCM and seperate video they should have kept DVI & Toslink the 'standard'.

I never have Handshake problems with my HD-DVD's over VGA from my XBox 360. The only way to have 1080p on an analog signal.

Toslink can't cope with 5.1-7.1 PCM, only with stereo 16 bit audio @ 44 hkz. It is the same problem that you had with DVD-A or SACD.

The proposed standard is to have the one cable with audio and video, which it can do today. The thing the OP was talking about was for the case you didn't have an HDMI capable receiver (which most people don't). In such case you can get the full quality audio via the analog outs, or you also have the option to get lossy DTS/DD out with toslink.

Now regarding the player decoding the track to PCM, that is the original format the audio was in.. and with teh lossless codecs, that is a non issue. It is decompression in reality. Some BR titles even have the audio in PCM directly, and most True HD tracks are 20 bits and at more than 44 Khz.

Zero.

In fact, after much evaluation and research, last year I decided to purchase an EDTV plasma. Makes very little sense to get an HDTV in my country. Only one cable operator has one HD channel, which is DJ'ed by their own people putting together some HD content they get from their sources from different channels. Definitely not worth the extra expense yet. Also, you need the right close enough viewing distance (and or huge enough display) to make the most of an HD display. I haven´t yet seen any HD player here, except for the PS3. And for sure, I have seen absolutely no HD media here, neither HD-DVD nor BluRay.

Venezuela is supposedly choosing a terrestrial digital TV standard before end of year. That might help increase the move towards HD. But it will be a few years before we turn analog TV off.

Greatly enjoying my Edtv (see HT Rig in my signature), and I expect to keep enjoying it with my regular DVDs for a few years before I switch to an HD display in my HT.
