I had trouble finding comments on the matchup between W5000 and Schiit Asgard. I really enjoy the sound of W5000 with even with iphone. As a first step to upgrade, I'm considering Asgard or possibly Valhalla. For DAC, I'm considering audinst. If you have had any experience, I want to know how it went. Or if you have any other suggestions for amp matchup with W5000 in the similar price range, help me out!

The valhalla won't be a good match for your headphones. The W5000 has low impedance so if you go with a tube amp you'll want one that's transformer coupled, not OTL (output transformerless) like the valhalla, which is made for higher impedance headphones. The asgard is made more for low impedance headphones like the W5000.

being an ex W5k owner, i think i can safely guess that neither shiit amps will play nice with it. the W5k needs current much rather than voltage & barely require any gain either.

OTOH the shiit lyr mite be a different animal. perhaps others who have tried that particular combo can chime in.

The Lyr is designed to drive power hungry headphones like the LCD-2 and HE-6 orthodynamics. I would think that the Asgard is a more suitable choice for the sensitive and efficient W5000.

I am very close, if not already there, with my conclusion that HA5000 is the only way to go.

Not everyone can afford the HA5000.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'd hate to have someone come across this thread and think otherwise but the Asgard pairs really well with the W5K, and I'm not just saying that because it's my main set up.
Both 6Moons and they guys over at Schiit agree.

Sorry to burst you bubble, until you heard W5000 out of HA5000, you never heard what W5000 is capable.

And I'm sure your opinion has some scraps of validity, but it's not the end all be all amp for it. People don't have that kind of money.

From what I've heard, it only pairs well with the W5000 in the first place. Which makes sense considering it was made for it.

The Asgard is an amazing amp for it, and it's not just me who is saying it. That, and it pairs well with other cans too, unlike the HA5000.

Totally incorrect, I take it you never heard the HA5000 before.  Actually the HA5000 pairs very well with other headphones, it does a very well with AKG K701, Senn HD6x0, and HD800.  And yes, the HA5000 is the end of the all the amps if you love your W5000.   And yes, I have tried a lot of amps before finally decided to give HA5000 a try.

As for a budget amp, WA6 with EML 5U4G mesh and Sylvania 6EW7 is a great match.

You're saying one can't actually love these cans until you've bought a 17000 dollar amp for it?

Be careful, your pretentious head-fier is showing.
