I currently have a pair of SR80's and like the thickness/durability of the cord. I have a pair of AKG K141S and K401 on the way and hear that their cable is noticeably thinner. I'd rather have something that can take a beating and won't get chewed on by the cat (anything relatively thin seems to look delicious to her, and the SR80's cable goes completely unnoticed by her).

How would I go about changing the cable on the AKG's? And what cable would be a good, relatively inexpensive choice for replacement? I'm looking for something thicker/more durable. Also, can I get a right angle 1/8" for use with portables? If so, where could I get something like that?

Lastly, how much would the cable and new plug cost me, and where's the best place to purchase stuff like this? I'm a complete newb when it comes to this...

thanks!

I've done it on AKG's, a few times. It's actualy not that hard once you know what to do (which I didn't at first). Thake apart the left cup snipping all the wires in the process and use silver solder paste and an iron to do the welding. DON'T BE LAZY AND TRY TO SOLDER THE WIRES WITHOUT TAKING APART THE ENTIRE CUP!!! you'll just ruin the plastic around it. Go to the markertek website and order some miniture canare star-quad microphone cable and a nuetrik 1/4" plug. Just oder one run (10ft or so in a single line) of the cable as it has four wires in it which you can run to both drivers from one cup a la stock AKG. Buy some techflex and heatshrink for the plug to put on BEFORE connecting it to the headphone and there you have, a super rugged a yet not too thick cable.
