Hi,
I am a newbie so please bear with the rookie questions

.
Currently I have Sony MDR-V300 heaphones. I have never heard a Grado SR-60 or Senn 201,PX.. etc..so I am not sure where the sound quality of the V300 stands as compared to those. Would it be worth switching to a grado or senn in the $50 range ? Would I experience a noticeable difference in sound quality ?
I will be using these with a portable cd player.

Oh no another new guy.. Welcome to the forum!!
Try and listen to as many cans as possible and let YOUR ears tell you what sounds good or bad. We all hear things differently so for someone to tell you what YOUR ears hear is wrong IMHO.

Now.... I can tell you what MY ears think...

The V300 is not that good for the $$$. IMHO the portapro, UR40 and KSC75 trounce on it for about the same price. The V300 lacks deep bass, midrange, and treble. Soundstage is compressed, conjested and lacks depth.

I have an MDRV200 coming soon and will post impressions when it gets here... should be very similar to the V300.

If you nee some degree of isolation, the MDRV6 is a better phone for ~$25 more.

Yet still, try and listen to as many as you can.

I used to have the V300's, i sold em. They had no mids at all, the bass was so boomy and muddy, the highs were OK but nothing great, and they were very uncomfy. Right now i dont have a pair of cans (unless u count the EX 71

) but im looking into the Grado SR80 or the Senn HD485 (i think its that) both are under 100 bucks.

I hear ya. but the problem with shopping for headphones is that there is no opportunity to "audition" as such - unlike speakers. Atleast the places where I was shopping - Best Buy, Circuit City,...
The only way to do that is to buy the ones you are interested and return them except the one you like.

Yeah I know it sucks that way....
My BB used to have sony cans on display. you have to bring in your MP3 player and plug them in. You can demo Koss TD61s at tower records, and the bose triports at circuit city CD jukebox. I think media play also uses Koss cans.
One of my local Frys also has a sony demo board... MDRCD580, 380, V700 and a couple others.

if you can find a local grado dealer spend some time there.

Sometimes guitar center has some cans laying around pluged into mixing consoles and hard drive recorders.

Hmm... cant think of anythineg else....

V200s? The V250Vs are the exact same as the V150s except has a built in volume control. I still find there to be a large noticable difference between the V150/250s to the V300s. I've never heard of the V200s though.

They look exactly like the MDRV100s. Are the drivers different? Is there an actuall difference between the V100s/V150s/V250Vs and these V200s? I swore they all used the same drivers, where as the V150s were just the V100s updated with a newer design, and the V250s added the volume control.

Ah just noticed they fold up. I'm guessing that's the only difference it adds from the rest, I assume they sound the same though.

Quick parts search at partstore.com shows the V200 uses sony part # 150511721 for its driver. Its not used on the V150/100/300. So, chances are its going to sound different... could be better or worse.... we'll see...

At any rate Im planing on doing driver transplants, unless they sound that good, which I highly doubt.

I had an MDR-V200 before, myself. It sounded just plain muddy. There's no low-end extension, no top-end extension, bloated lower mids. Very similar in sound signature to the other MDR-VCR@PDJ series cans.

I used to have an MDR-V300, as well. Well, that 'phone was also severely colored, as well. Overblown bass with no low-end extension, sucked-out mids and grainy highs.

i had the V150. creaky, like the plastic was groaning its fate for being molded for such an acoustic tragedy. the v600 my buddy has isn't much better. i threw away the v150 after getting the MS-1 last year - not even worth selling it on ebay for 2 bucks, and i wouldn't wish the sound on anyone. the v300 might be better, but i shy away from that whole V series now.

So, is it safe to say that all Sony Vx00 cans are bad (I originally thought that the case only applied to V600s, but does it apply to others like the V700)?

i will risk my reputation of not commenting on cans I haven't heard, but honestly i wouldn't want to risk my ears by having to listen to the entire MDR-V series to say this - Sony was on Crack when it put out this series of cans.
