I have a pair of Senn HD-545's that I bought new a couple of years ago, and have found them to be comfortable and capable of producing better sound than any of the cheap headphones I had previously used. (My primary "source" is the Soundblaster Live soundcard on my computer, and I spend hours every day at my home office listening to music.) I've also read that the HD-545's are decent-to-good headphones. Still, I know I'm missing alot. I've heard audiophile-quality systems (not rhough headphones), and I do realize that what I'm listening to is just a pale reflection of what is possible. I want to change that.
Now, with a budget of, say, $500 or so, how can I best upgrade my listening experience? Does it make more sense to replace my headphones, or are the 545's good enough for now while I buy another component? Would it make more sense to buy a headphone amp? Or both? I'm willing to invest more if necessary -- and probably will in the course of the next 6 months or so -- but want to make sure that I take a logical first step on my way to building a decent-sounding rig.
Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
