The reason I ask is because I'm trying to decide if I can afford to buy the Porta Corda/ HD580 combo

If I buy these I won't have money to buy another good set of phones for use on the go so I'll probably be lugging the HD580 with me around sometimes (although I can't imagine wearing those huge monsters on the streets

) Are they anywhere near as solid as the Sony V6?

Umm, this is a hard question since they usually are not considered to be portable cans. I think that they are durable for home use but they would not be my first choice as a portable can. I would get some earbuds like the MX500 if I was going out in the elements.

LOL, well I imagine most owners of the 580s (like me) don't go trying to stress-test them. FWIW, I have been known to occasionally toss my 580s down on the (well-carpeted) floor from a couple of feet high, and they still work fine.

I have the HD580s. I think they're pretty durable, though the part of the earpieces where the wires connect make me slightly nervous. Thankfully the cable is replaceable if anything goes wrong with it.

I'd call the HD580s "luggable." You can bring them with you in a carrying bag but I wouldn't suggest wearing them while mobile. I'd call the Sony MDR-V6 "portable," which means they're suitable for short walks but I wouldn't want to wear them while jogging or on really long walks.

If you don't own a pair of Koss KSC-35s, you're really missing out on the best headphone for active listening. Great for long walks and/or jogging. Much smaller and lighter than either the Sonys or the Senns. Plus, amazingly good sound for the money (about $30). Do yourself a favor and pick up a pair.

I'd think they'll handle it pretty well. I remove the cord of my 565 (same cable connection) when I put them in a bag tho, it's their weak spot.

I broke my HD565s by being too... erm... un-careful with them...

I caught the wire on something (my foot)... and it tugged the cable out of the drive unit enclosure, and... whoopsy daisy, the hair-thin cable between the connector and the drive unit snapped

Good job i have got a nice friendly dealer who replaced the drive unit for free

I have the Sony EX70 for real portable uses, so I'm all right there...

I'll 'lug' them around, mostly, and listen to them only when sitting down, I think

My dream these days is to take my pcdp + Porta Corda + HD580 to the university music library and in the listening room, instead of listening to one of the roomful of HD565s, put on the *HD580s* and fire up my own rig. Now that's what I call 'bragging rights'

Lame, I know

But I'm considering the V6 + JMT altoid amp too... I can throw in a new pcdp for the price of the Porta Corda + HD580...

Before I had more portable cans, lugged my 580s around everywhere. As long as you don't smash them around too much, they will take a little abuse. They are solidly made. Then again, by lugging them around, I mean that I bring them places....when I actually use them I am sitting down. I would just gingerly put them in my backpack, and try not to forget that they were in there so that I wouldn't throw my backpack down. As for the music library, make sure you are in a private listening room, because if you listen with any volume in the open, people will hear them, and likely give you dirty looks.
