Anyone tried the Oppo as a stand alone CD/SACD player? How does it compare to other players. I need another CD player and instead of buying another Sony SCD-CE595, I thought about the Oppo.

Is it as good as the Sony?

Chalk up another one wondering about this one. It'd also be really nice to have a cheap DVD-A/SACD player lying around that doesn't take up much space.

Sony is probably the only budget option brand for a new player that does true DSD decoding.

Maybe not eh?

This is kind of amusing... I have the Oppo 970HD and am very impressed with the sound quality for a $150 player. The Sony only plays SACD and Red book where as the Oppo is a true universal player. The Oppo does convert the signal to PCM, but so does the $6000 Linn Unidisk! In fact, most players that are not Sony DO convert to PCM before the DAC. One thing to consider is that the Oppo 970 send this SACD PCM signal out the HDMI and can be used with an external DAC for the SACD discs! I would not trade the Oppo for a cheap Sony ever. I have DVD Audio discs that sound great on the Oppo that Sony will never support. That said, Sony players or players with the Sony hardware can sound better on SACD than most or all other players on the market IF THE OUTPUT STAGE IS DECENT!

I have one. Purchased because I needed an upconverting DVD player to go with a new HDTV and chose OPPO because of the SACD/DVD-A, etc.

Sound quality: inoffensive but certainly not reaching heights that might be expected given the hype. I saw TAS giving it an award. It has to be the $150. It isn't nearly as articulate or as spatially complete as the DAC1 (Yeah ok $150 vs $900 or something). Don't let the high praise raise expectations too high. I can't use it as a main player.
