OK, from what i have read here so far, is the general consensus here in head-fi prefers the K701 over unbalanced HD650's. So for the people who have heard the HD650 in a balance setup, how do they compare against the K701 unbalanced?

I think that statement is a bit too generalized. A lot of the k701 hype may have just been new toy syndrome. Certainly not everyone beleives the k701 is the better headphone.

Biggie.

I understand not everyone prefers the K701 over the HD650 but that is the trend at the moment. A lot of the HD650 users have switched or prefferred the K701 over their HD650 (at the moment), whether it's a temporary phase or not, nobody knows.

i've heard both, i very much like the balenced HD650 over the K701....but that's an expensive option.

The K701 is very popular at the moment and a great phone, but I don't even think you'd get a true majority consensus that it's superior to the HD650, so the premise of the question is a bit off. I think you can assume a majority consensus that the HD650 balanced is superior to the HD650 single, but that's about it. Maybe "those who prefer the K701s signiture to the HD650, do you prefer it to even the balanced K701?." Difficult to compare with [usually] different amps though.

Personally, I pefer the K701 to the Senn stock and the Senn/Zu to either.

True, balance HD650 is quite expensive but I'm looking at this from a long term perspective. Buying one component at a time. I'm deciding between these two headphones ATM and Lavry DA10 > Equinox > HD650 Balance is an option for me. Sure its expensive but I can always save up for it.
