I remember when I got my HD650s there was a thread around that had a picture on how you should have those cans positioned over your ear. It is kinda hard to do the same thing with the RS-1s. So how do you position your Grados on your ears?

Umm . . . with the driver lined up to my ear canal? How else would you have any headphone?

With the HD650's when I positioned them like people suggested it opened up the soundstage alot. With the HD650s I wear them with the top rear part of the housing just touching my ear, so the driver isn't directly lined up with my canal but it did wonders for the sound. I never would have thought to try that unless it was suggested here on HF. With Grados the cups obviously aren't as large so you cant do the same.

maybe get a pair of hd414 pads and ditch the bowls

I ordered flats from TTVJ, I'll have to research those HD414 pads too. Thanks.

I haven't tried this with my HD650s...I think I will tonight. Generally, the driver is supposed to be below and in front of your ear canal right? (Lower on your head, toward the front of the head).

I position them so that my ear is fully inside the bowls. The back edge of my ear is against the back inside surface of the bowls.

On the contrary...

The sound produced by a headphone can change considerably depending upon how you place the drivers in relation to your ear canals.

In my experience, the difference tends to be more dramatic and obvious with supra-aural phones (for example: Grados) as opposed to circum-aural phones.

Here is a link that can demonstarte what I am talking about:

Headphone Tricks.

Somtimes it is ok to think 'outside of the box'.
