How do you know what db level you are listening to?

I agree. I am already 57 and would like to preserve my hearing for a long time to come.

Are you aware of the special requirements for headphones SPL measurement?
You have to mimic the seal when headphones are worn on the head, for instance by a piece of cardboard (with a hole for the mike naturally).

IIRC there are a few threads with tips on how to correctly measure the DB level on headphone with a DB meter. A search might be helpful here ...

There are 3 or 4 good threads. Here is an old pic that shows basically how you might do this.
