How do current portable amps stack up against the original Airhead?

I'm considering putting an amp on my Christmas list. The original Airhead sounds good, but, l assume it can be bettered by something new (better op-amps, etc.) While it is older and plain in its grey plastic case, I also assume that fancy caps and pretty packages don't guarantee improvements.

Could anyone who has used or listened extensively to the old Airhead and current units comment on where the old one sits in the rank of sound quality, and what you preferred instead (if you favor another unit)? Thanks!

Jude did a review of the 2006 Total Bithead shortly after it came out, which included a comparison with the prior version. It was a very informative review and I remember that Jude's observations tracked mine pretty closely. I'll see if I can find a link but I'm sure you can find it through a quick search.

I have owned an original Total Airhead for a number of years. I have abused this amp to no end. It has been bounced across the floors of more airports than I care to say. It has always worked and provided hours of musical pleasure. It sounds good, the volume control has never made any noise and it has the cross-feed feature.

The only think I wish it had was an "on" light. I believe the newer models have a light. I would buy one again.
