Long time lurker first time poster here. I recently bought a pair of Grado SR-60s and am enjoying my first taste of open air cans and the "Grado sound". My Creative USB soundcard's headphone out seems to be on its way out though - the right channel intermittently goes out every now and then and it gets p. annoying. So I did a bit of searching for a new DAC and ended up purchasing the Hotaudio Destroyer DAC on sale for $55 shipped. I also looked into getting a higher end DAC/Amp combo but all of the ones worth getting were out of my price range (under $70 shipped).
Here are the specs for the Destroyer @ http://hotaudio.com/ :
Output Volts (RMS): 0.63
Headphone Impedence: 25 to 300 Ohms
Output Power 32 Ohms: 12mW
RCA Outputs: Yes
DAC Chip: Texas Instruments PCM2705
Power Supply: USB Powered
Sound described as "Warm"
I will be primarily using this plugged into my desktop PC w/ foobar used as my music player. I'm hoping that I'll get a nice upgrade in sound quality and max volume compared to the Creative USB soundcard I've been using for the past two years or so. I'm also hoping that this mid-fi DAC will be adequate for the time being as a stopgap solution (seeing as how the SR-60s are easily driven @ 32 Ohms and don't scale that well anyway) until I can afford a better set of cans and a dedicated tube amp or whatever. I'm currently an unemployed undergrad student so my budget is pretty much limited only to necessities.
Anyway, any thoughts on this purchase and how well it'll go with the SR-60, synergy and so on? I also have a pair of Sennheiser EH-150s, but I rarely use those as they're pretty damn uncomfortable. Most of the time I just use earbuds/IEMs since I find them more comfortable, as I wear glasses.
