On a whim, I picked up The Killers Hot Fuss today. You know the one that has been pulling a Hootie and the Blowfish and floating at the top of the charts on the power of single after single for a lifetime now.

I may be late to the games, but to me, this is good pop.

So I want to read some takes. Is this band a one album wonder? Or maybe they will put out some more good ones.

Whaddya peoples think?

I really don't like them. They are part of a five-year-or-so spree of bands that all sound kind of similar to each other; the really whiny, exagerated voices, the clean drums and sleazy guitars, and the clothing styles -- it's a fad.

These bands exist because it's what's "in" now, really. I think this album became popular because they are some of the best examples of the 'genre'. However, I don't see too many more successful releases from these guys.

Just my opinions, of course.

it's a phase that's already going out of fashion. retro bands don't last long unless your name is No Doubt.

Maybe I am just getting old, but they all sound retro to me!

I was checking tou billboard and Hot Fuss has been on the charts 63 weeks and ONLY shipped 2 million copies! X & Y has already shipped 2 million in ony 12 weeks. Of course, it seems I can't buy gas without spotting a copy for sale.

Could there be something to the music piracy thing?

*L* Anyway, I had a feeling that is what you guys would say.

O/T: Why would you assume that because something is popular it must be bad? Why do you need validation from others to decide if you can like something that might be "uncool" if it's too popular? That's maybe a more interesting question.

Anyway, as for the Killers, I wouldn't buy their CD, but I don't change the channel when they're stuff comes on the radio. It's New Wave music, and that's cool, because I like a lot of New Wave (I was there the first time around, so there's entimental value). I think they have some potential, they're still a very young band.

*L* Seriously, read the thread. Man alive. why would you care or even want to make a comment about this other than to confront someone in a public forum.

I appreciate the latter comments though as it discusses The Killers.

virometal, you're right, it's an unnecessary comment, it reads harsher than it was meant though. More of a rhetorical question given the title of the thread. My apologies. Carry on!

EDIT: P.S. What is "*L*"?

Indeed, the comments do make sense in that vein. The nature of popularity and worth seem to conflict sometimes.

The *L* stands for a chuckle (not quite a lol); old habit I picked up way back in early chat rooms.

I actually like them a lot. I feel that most of their songs are quite catchy and actually are fun to listen to. Unlike some of the other bands that have come out who sound similar to the Killers, I find that the Killers may have some potential to do well in the future.

Considering that the Killers sound completely bland, they don't attract my attention unless the songwriting is really great. "Mr. Brightside" qualifies. The first single, and some of the other album tracks I've heard, do not. But hey, one great single is better than the Strokes were able to muster so it's not all bad.

Coldplay just had a much bigger following prior to the album. When X&Y hits 63 weeks, it will probably be certified at 3 or 4 million. No more than that, unless they can find a hit single on there somewhere. 2 million for a rock album these days is extremely good.

I wouldn't change the station on the Killers, but I don't think I'd buy the album either.
