It's subtly done, and keeps you very off-balance about exactly what's going on, what's real, and what's a dream. Jacobs Ladder is extremely interesting/clever plot....(edited)

I have extremely high tolerance for horror/violence/gore and have seen almost all movies of this genre including foreign films of Argento, Fulci etc. One of the most horrific graphically frightening/bloody films (not done as satirical splatter comedy) that is actually available to mainstream with high production values is Hellrasier II - Hellbound unrated version. If you thought original Hellraiser was over the top wait till you see this, great visual images in labyrinth sequences......be sure it is "unrated" version not the cleaned up "R" rated version, do not see this if you have weak stomach or are afraid of your own shadow, he he.

BTW Hellraiser 3 & 5 are very lame efforts and a waste of time. Hellraiser 4 - Bloodlines is very good and important for fans because it is both a sequel and a prequel, 3rd best in Hellraiser series.

Gee, thanks for giving away the secret to those who haven't seen it yet...

EDIT: DarkAngel, thanks for cleaning that up. The truth about what's going on was something that really did take me by surprise the first time I saw JL, so I didn't want it to be spoiled for those who haven't seen it yet.

Well, if you haven't then you should watch it, it's one of my favorites. That said, many people can't make sense of it and will not like it.

I prefer the more sublte thriller/supsense movies. Horror movies always crack me up.

I can't for the life of me understand why everyone rated "28 days later" so highly.. It was even discussed here with posts aching towards "omg best movie ever".

Most of these alleged "horror" movies are so completely idiotic it's senseless. I mean, how can they expect to scare anyone with those ridiculess plots. The only movies that ever scare me are psychological thrillers.

The Game was excellent.

The Sphere had horribly cheesy effects, but that's okay since it all happens in their heads. Or does it? To me, the presence of that last question seems to be the foundation of a good scary movie.

I thought 28 Days Later was a pretty cool movie...just the sense of being one of few survivors after the virus had taken over was enough to give you the creeps. Some other movies that might be worth checking out:

Man, your expectations/reactions of the Ring totally match mine with regards to 28 days... To name just a few things about that movie.... "infected with hate"??? That alone cracks me up... And what's with the cheesy use of the "28 days later"-screen? The second time, it says 28 days right after the guy gets really injured and then 28 days later the girl finally gets him rushed through the hospital? So it took her a month to get him there? Funniest thing in that movie, save for the plot, is when it said 28 days the second time and there is a green field with the word "HELL" in the upper left corner. "OHHH they were writing HELP! ahh now i understand.... DEERP!"

The title of it is just Sphere I believe. IMO that was a great movie. I had read the book prior to seeing the movie, but even so, a friend of mine who watched it kept commenting on some of the plot twists (I guess you call them that?) and how it left him going "What?!" (In a good way.)

I ended up watching the whole movie ( The Ring ) - in the daytime - with the blinds open - with sensible volume - with the remote in my hand to turn it down or mute when the scary crap happened.

Actually - it wasnt too bad. But this will be the last horror movie I will see for a looooong time. Its hard enough getting any sleep under normal conditions that I have to spook myself to make it worse

Yeah, that's also part of what makes a really scary movie. I love it when they suddenly realise they are all standing in front of the sphere - and from then on it just keeps getting even crazier!!

However, there are the kinds of movies, tv-shows, whatever, that showcase multiple instances of a good thing throughout, and then there are those that focus on a long build up, making one amazing feat possible in the end. The South Park episode "Scott Tenorman must die" comes to mind - it pretty much only features a single joke, but it is the most funny plot twist EVER, making for the funniest ANYTHING ever to have been created. bar none.

With regards to scary or just plain amazing plot twists, the Game achieves the same thing.

KR...,

When I saw 28 days with my older brother, we actually speculated that it was an "eight legged freaks"-esque parody. (a must see btw)
You can imagine how disillusioned i got when I heard the praises friends and head-fi'ers alike were giving it.

There's a movie called "Guinea Pig", well actually, it's a series. The first movie dealt with the supossed killing by torture of a woman. The thing was so well staged that some people believed it was the real thing. Has anybody seen it?

Let me correct the Hellrasier chronology......Bloodlines is 4th movie:
-Hellraiser
-Hellraiser II - Hellbound
-Hellraiser III - Hell on Earth
-Hellraiser IV - Bloodlines
-Hellraiser V - Inferno
-Hellraiser VI - Hellseeker

Have not seen Hellraiser VI, but 3 & 5 are lame and Bloodlines 4 is the sequel/prequel taking place 200 years past (creation of puzzle box), present, and 200 years in future on space station where nasty surprise ending awaits pinhead. Critics hate this movie which is a good sign plus director is an Allen Smithee which adds to the mystique.

Since Halloween is approaching will have to pull out unrated Hellbound DVD for annual spin, here is what unrated version looks like (don't get sissy R version):

Hellraiser II (unrated)
