Home cooked headphones - Come one come all! Anyone welcome

Tree supports are 100% perfect for what I use. In headphone printing especially!

I would highly reccomend a locking meanism for the drivers if you plan to make more in the future. Adds a bit more work but pays off in the long run.
More for sure. Has been a bit of a learning curve for me. I think now I could roughly make a nut + bolt system for the drivers easily enough.

The driver imbalance in last project Ill try troubleshooting this weekend.

I measured impedance of several drivers including the "imbalanced" ones and all individual pairs matched well. The "imbalance" I think may have been caused by not plugging the L/R cables into headphone all the way. oops

Next drivers for next project are going to be for another grado style build. I will try incorporating a un/locking driver mechanism that will be part of an actual grill.

^ Still waiting to wire up, had to order more 3.5mm female connectors.

Next project idea: Stax Sigma style enclosure. Here is a diagram of Sigma, notice driver is on front wall. For rest I think Sigma uses porous walls lined with foam.

Very rough sketch.:

^ View from ear-side. Large oval hole for ears + pads. Small circular hole for driver. Wall delete at back-side to let sound escape.
v View from out-side.

- Expecting would use T50RPmk2/3 flat pads. I want to get driver oriented perpendicular from ear but without making too distant from ear or having too obscured by objects such as pads or walls.
- In this sketch the back of enclosure is open but could easily make closed, vented, porous, or wide open.
- At some point I would like to learn how to make a simple rotation joint so could angle walls or drivers on the fly like AKG K1000.
- Undecided about headband situation.

==================

@AsciiJC I want to make headband support straps for my various headphones but my printer is too Mini. What do you think about using wings instead? like Audio Technica style but simpler (no joints, just flex).

Where do you guys source your screws from? I tried some M3 self-tappers from Aliexpress and the just snapped if I put even a medium amount of torque on them.

I am not familar on subject.
I tried searching for you a list of metal strengths. I think this will give you some guidance.

Anecdote: I once gave my friend some parts including generic non-descript screws to build a headphone but he advised uprated screws and so he bought different screws (304 stainless steel).

Thanks. I'm familiar with metals (mechanical engineer by profession) but i guess you can't always trust what's on the spec sheet on Aliexpress haha. Will have to hunt around for a trustworthy local supplier.

Stax Sigma style continued...

Im only doing the driver baffle / wall for prototype. I will roughly test enclosure wall's size and shape by installing foam board substitues on to prototype instead of re-printing x times. See the miracles of foam core board for loudspeaker enclosures here.

- still need to add rear-side grill for driver and other adjustments im sure.
- driver will be 50mm (aliexpress sells some 70mm but they are pricey)
- pad mounts sized for Fostex T50RP size pads

What it could look like with walls:

^ for now will just friction fit driver

Going to try using this headband but am worried the included headband support strap will be too small/constricting for my conehead so may be next trying to create support wings to replace the stock support strap.

Lessons learned:
- female cable connection tabs are too close to ear now because no barrier wall which is usually the driver baffle, so will angle them and wall off.
- future rear grill because also need to to protect the super exposed wires

Need to make second cup, then will have a listen.

Walls / baffle wings surely will need to be implemented for some bass.

Had to do make some adjustments for headband, moved female connector plug, and smoothed out interior walls. Printing Right channel now.

After experimenting with drivers and walls Ill create the rear cover for drivers/wires.

I think Ill start working on those headband wings today because Grell OAE1 could benefit now.

Nice! I would like to learn how to make a headband eventually. Does your headband have height adjustment? Most 3DP headband Ive seen so far look either somewhat fragile or too bulky but yours looks quite reasonable. I think I would add a suspension strap like @AsciiJC makes and be happy.

The 3DPrint lines look great like a Japanese Zen garden. I would love to have that texture on the outside of some 3DP headphone cups. Could be very artful!

The infill tool used for grills I havent tried to figure out yet but want to eventually because the gyroid pattern looks perfect.
