Don't make me look at those pictures. I stumbled across a university surplus auction open to the public -- two days after it ended. Four EMT 927 turntables had sold for $40 each. I pulled hair and screamed for about two days.

I always assumed it was so you could compare cartridges or use a different stylus for different types of records (i.e. 78, 45, 331/3)

You use the same cartridge for 45 and 33 1/3 records.

I'd imagine he probably has one for stereo, one for mono, and one for 78s. Stereo/mono is a fairly common use of dual tonearms.
