For those of you that have tried the DT 770, I've read that in addition to the bass, it is a little bright up top. Is this true? How fatiguing is the DT 770, if at all?

I had narrowed my choices down to those two, also. I went with the DT 770 because:

  • I could purchase locally at Guitar Center
  • The velour ear cups. Seriously. They are so comfortable and breathable. I never get the icky-stickies.

It is a little "bright" on the high end, but I don't find it particularly fatiguing. I use them for:
  • Marathon Battlefield 2 gaming sessions - never get uncomfortable. One time I forgot I had 'em on and got up and tried to walk away. Hearing footsteps, tanks moving, enemies or friendlies talking - I'm able to place them in my mind because of these headphones, and I truly believe that I've improved my gaming skillz (lol) because of these phones (running your graphics on low and buying a mouse like the Razer Diamondback are also things that help in BF2).
  • Watching movies on my PC or home theater system - I watched 3 episodes of "24" the other day and didn't take the phones off once. My receiver is an Onkyo TX-575, and these phones sound awesome!
  • Listening to music on the PC or through my iPod Nano (2GB - if that makes any difference in sound - LOL) - I walk around with them in the house while I'm doing chores like laundry and stuff. I really like the isolation when I'm waiting my basement laundry room or if I'm washing dishes. Also, I hang out in my basement a lot and the furnace fan goes off and I have 2 PCs with big Delta fans cooling them - these Beyers provide excellent isolation. Everything sounds so loud when I take 'em off.

I really like these phones. I never get headaches, my ears never ache, and I don't get sweaty where the phones touch my head. Sound is awesome - the perfect phones for what I like to do.

You'd really be shocked at how easy it is to wear these things around. I know people look at me like I'm crazy on the NYC streets wearing them... but they're just so damned light and comfortable.

I don't find them fatiguing at all (even after hours of use) and I often have the bass EQ'd to push them even furthur. I always suspected that for the whole 'burn-in' things was just psychological, but I can tell you that after about 100 hours of use they now sound totally fantastic. Perhaps they changed, perhaps I did, but either way, it's the only full size can I have right now and I won't be looking for another anytime soon. But make sure the are amped and make sure that the music you listen to is suited to their sound.

It's a little bright, but never unpleasantly so.

Indeed, and a re-cable can basically eliminate the treble brightness, while keeping the detail.

*sigh* And there's my dillemma. I really love the sound of my 770s, but I also VERY much want to woody them. I know they'll sound great, I know they'll look great.

But is this going to interfere with the "luggable" nature of them as I use them now? They're so light, comfortable, and rugged as they are now. A woody mod, while making them sound better, might result in me using them less.

Hell, I don't know about your financial situation, but the stock 770s are so cheap that you could just buy another pair. I think you'd be nuts to use larrphiled 770s as your portable/luggable

I just got these cans, and from the headphone out it didn't sound any better than my Koss ksc 35's. As a matter of fact it sounded pretty crappy.

With all these good reviews I'm reading, I'm wondering if you guys use these cans from the lineout with an amp instead of the headphone out?

By the way, I use the Sony DFJ401 as my source.

Yep, line out and amp. They will really only sound their best this way. Portables are not good for driving big cans unamped.

The only way to use this phone is line out--->amp.

Very very hard to compare. Totally different animals. The Beyers are fun, but not in the least bit balanced in their presentation (not necessarily a bad thing). The Senns are refined and smooth, but just forward enough to keep them groovy for rock. I think the Senns are the better headphones overall, in the sense that they are more refined and versatile. But I'm sure others will disagree. However, HD 595 will also play quite well out of the HP out, while the DT 770 will not.

how does the bass of the dt770-250 compare to that of the dt770-80? i know the 80 ohm model is well known for it's huge bass...but haven't really heard about the 250.

i'd prefer the 250 ohm model because i like the new redesigned look a lot better.

just wondering if there is a noticeable difference if you run the headphones from an amp.

I own the new 250 Ohm version, and IMO, the "old" 80 ohm version is still better sounding.
