Hi everyone... I love Diana Krall and someone has recommended Holly Cole as another female vocalist to listen to. Does anyone here have any CD recommendations or another other female vocalists to consider? Thanks in advance and happy listening!

Holly Cole is great. I'd suggest the album "Don't Smoke in Bed"

Other female vocalists to consider:
Jacintha
Eva Cassidy
Jane Monheit
Stacey Kent
Susannah McCorkle

Madeleine Peyroux, Sonya Kitchell, Norah's first 2 albums (First Sessions and Come Away With Me), if you like DK you might also like Shirley Horn perhaps?

I should refrain from mentioning that I do not like Holly Cole or her band, based on listening to Don't Smoke.

I really enjoy all of Holly Cole's albums. Don't Smoke In Bed is likely her most famous (it was her breakout album afterall) however if you want a really thrilling ride...try Temptation, it is an album of tributes to Tom Waits. Seriously it is some of the moodiest bestest vocals of all-time.

Isn't it amazing how even with similar music we have distinct musical tastes/appreciation.

I second Madeleine Peyroux, particularly her last album, but can't for the life of me handle Norah (except when she rocks a little with Peter Mallick).

Can't comment - yet - on Holly Cole.

Adore DK.

Mid 90s Vanessa Rubin has its moments.

Thanks! Keep the recommendations coming.. With respect to Norah Jones, I have her albums as well but I have to be in the mood for her, while Diana Krall puts me into a mood.. Either way I think I'll give Dont' smoke in Bed and Temptation a try...

x2 x2! I have both of these on vinyl and they are great sounding.

The other recommendations here are solid as well. I would add Tierney Sutton and Patricia Barber.

Yeah, I think female vocalists are particularly a matter of tastes. DK is okay sometimes -- I much, much prefer the insanely beautiful voice of Rosa Passos any day of the week, or Céu or Bebel Gilberto. Norah had an innocence and sweetness I really liked, especially hearing her on Marian McPartland's and doing Horace Silver's Peace - pretty phenomenal. Yet her last two studio efforts were less than appealing to me. In fact the second one was downright boring to me, and I was hopeful for the third but haven't been terribly interested to lean for it and thus have not given it a fair shake yet, though my initial listens were not favorable.

3rd the Holly Cole - Temptation rec, her best album.

Also check out Dave's True Story, another great female vocal band, but with some very snarky and clever humor.

Voltron, Good recs on Patricia Barber abd Tierney Sutton - they have quite a few albums, can you suggest their best?

This has made me think of who else in this sphere I need to listen to. While we're at it, does anyone have opinions on Diane Schur or Erin Bode?

HK's "Shade" is pretty awesome too. Others to consider are Radka Toneff (Fairytales is a must have female jazz album), Clair Martin, Carol Kidd, a second recommendation for Dave's True Story (start with Sex Without Bodies or Unauthorized), and, of course, the great Ella Fitzgerald. One of Norah Jones' overlooked ablums is under the band and album name The Little Willies. I find in many ways this to be her best album. Patricia Barber's Cafe Blue is outstanding.

Don't forget about some non-jazz female vocalists such as Joni Mitchell (too many amazing albums to to list, but start with Blue or Court and Spark), Joan Baez (Farewell Angelina), Carol King (Tapestry), Peggy Lee (Is that all there is?), Eva Cassidy (Live at Blues Alley, Songbird, Imagine), Cowboy Junkies (The Trinity Sessions), Everything But The Girl (Idlewild), Jewel (Pieces of You), Clair Marlo (Let it go), Linda Ronstadt (Simple Dreams), and Dusty Springfield (Dusty in Memphis).
