My house is filled with the sweet smells of Thanksgiving baking and babies. My Mom and Sister are both here with my wife and they started on the cakes and pies tonight and will get going on the sauces and such tomorrow. My sister also brought along her kids and I've been having a great time with them. I've not been feeling well the last few days but this really does the trick and I feel much better now. I'm sitting here with my little nephew on my lap drinking a glass of egg nog enoying the smell of sweet potatoe pies baking and my wife just laid a bowl behind me that we're both(my nephew and me) gonna lick clean as soon as I'm done typing this. This is truly my favorite time of the year and it's so great to have my family here cooking up all this great food and filling my house with all the smells I love.

I got a bowl to lick clean so I hope you guys understand me keeping this one short.

I thought this was another one of your "Funky Smells" thread

Thankfully it is something a LOT more preferable and pleasant.

The smell of cookies and turkey is something of a mystery to me. Never experienced a thanksgiving dinner ever

Indians dont cook turkey and the only thing we think of when we hear "thanksgiving" is "shopping".

Odd - this thanksgiving I will be doing more shipping than shopping...

Personally I'm dreading Thanksgiving because we have to have it at our house this year.
16 people in my tiny house with 4 of them under 6 yrs old!
I'm scared

Another Thanksgiving goes by... I'm starting to forget the taste of Thanksgiving dinner. And the family wouldn't be happy to see me, I'm betting - well, my grandparents would. I need to get home for a Thanksgiving or Christmas maybe next year. I can't keep putting it off.

We start the auxiliary cooking today, cleaning, chopping dicing fruit and vegetables, baking pies and breads, selecting wines, washing the seasonal glassware and dishes, changing the tablecloths to holiday motif, decorating.

This is where the excitement for the holidays begins...it is happening again!

You sound happy, Tubey - good for you! Love the little ones, and spoil them ROTTEN! Makes me smile, reading your descriptions...

The best of the season to you and yours, buddy!

I gotta go wash my hands, again...

Ive been busy since Monday with silver polishing, dishes, extra table leaves, table cloths and napkins, cookies, vegetables, and cake. Tomorrow that old T-Bird bites the bullet! I just hope I have the energy to direct the clean up. Oops, I should have written do the cleanup. But, then again, that's why they put the holiday on Thursday: you can keep cleaning on Friday.
Menu: Shrimp and crudites and cocktails/drinks during pre dinner period.
Roast butternut squash soup
Turkey with choice of wild rice stuffing or chestnut stuffing, and red wine reduced pan gravy,
Mashed potatoes,
Glazed sweet potatoes (marshmallows or no marshmallows?)
Steamed crisp asparagus with lemon infused sauce
Roasted Carrots
Tender field green salad with shaved parmigiana and balsamic vinaigrette

Pumpkin Pie, Apple Pie, chocolate mousse cake. cheese cake, cookies and chocolate truffles
Grapes, seckel pears, and nuts

Choice of coffee, decaf coffee, espresso, capucino, tea (brewed from loose leaves)
Wines: Light red Burgundy, White Sancerre
Also available: Beer (Killians), Coke, diet sodas, water, seltzer
After dinner: Cognac, Armagnac, Port

No wonder I'm dead on my feet the day before! I think that next year I'm going to simplify. Or better yet, hope that one of my greatful relatives will do the deed!
Edit: forgot the cranberry - orange conserve I made on Sunday!

I feel your pain Todd. Last year we had it here (well at the previous house we owned) with 21 people in attendance, 6 of which were under the age of 9. I think the birdzilla that we got was somewhere in the neighborhood of 24 lbs. I stood guard over my gear like you wouldn't believe. Fortunately the day went off great. We all ate ourselves silly and enjoyed each other's company. This year is here again, but only 9 people will be here with no one under the age of 16.

I agree, that's one heck of a Thanksgiving dinner. I think I would be totally content after finishing a Thanksgiving dinner like that.
