Hi...

Nice simple one for all the Grado owners out there... I'm getting into heavy metal quite a bit at the moment, and although the RS1s are great, I can't help but feel that one of the lower models would suit this genre better...

I'm thinking SR325... would you agree?

Thanks

Only if you enjoy and extremely bright sound would I recommend sr325. Personally I can't listen to them for more then 15minutes without extreme ear fatigue. Another option would be looking into an amp with more powerful output. Ive only listened to a meta briefly but I found it to be a bad combination with rs-1 and lacked the omff needed for hard music.

Biggie.

Its up to you mate, but I wouldnt do it unless you are sure, and you know you'll have some change out of any downgrado. I wouldnt do it if I was you, unless you are desperate for the cash, they are probably going to be one of the grooviest headphones you'll ever own

thanks for the voice of concern everyone...

Paul... I wouldn't sell the RS1 - maybe I mislead you with the title, i'm talking about 'as well as'

Saying that, i've won half of the battle, swapping out the OPA627s in my amp, and putting in my AD8620...

...only the other half to go

I always thought the SR325's were somewhat underrated here. Sure it's not neutral, refined or sweet but I found its combination of the sense of speed and nice midrange is virtually unmatched in other headphones I've tried including RS1 which, IMHO, sweetens the midrange too much with its lower-treble accentuation. Also I found the treble to be more than acceptable but the tolerance of a spiked-up treble is a very subject matter.

By no means they are a better all around pair than RS1's or the Senns but they do exceptionally well with some music and decent overall performers.

I found the SR325 to be quite pleasing with metal, until I upgraded my source, and their brightness really came through full-force, giving me headaches after a while. I don't know how "high-end" your source is, but depending the brightness may or may not be a problem. Of course you could go MS2 for less brightness, and hopefully the same fun-factor, or maybe PS-1

I auditioned the sr325s, the sr225s and the sr80's with mostly heavy metal tracks (In Flames, etc.) and ended up buying the 225's.

HI: How are you. I owned the grado 60,80,225,325,RS1. The 60 were OK and the 80 had better bass. The 225 seem to have it all going for it in many ways. The 325 were bright and I couldn't listen to them for any length of time. The RS1 sounded great but when I a/b them with the 225 they both sounded great and the 225 were a lot less expensive and lighter. So out of the bunch I liked the 225 best. Maybe with high end gear the RS1 would have done better. Also I bought the senn. headband and it really improved the headband comfort on the 225.

The Grado 225's are the best metal 'phones I've heard so far. The RS-1s kill them in detail, smoothness, flat frequency response, soundstaging, and all that other stuff, but when you want crunchy in your face guitars and hard, pounding drums I've yet to hear something better than the 225's. Put flat or VWAP pads on them and headbang to Slayer, Metallica, and Ozzy 'till you drop. It just makes metal sound right.

How far behind the 225's are the 125's? Is the difference mostly in the bass? (I'm abandoning the Senn HD600 ship).

doing a quick comparison between the ms-1 (alessandro's version of the sr80/125) and the sr225, the sr225 has much more bass, bass impact, and speed, along with crisper highs. the bass goes lower than the ms-1, but i can definitely feel a very strong mid-bass hump

I don't remember, haven't heard the 125's in a long time.

Offtopic: Any particular reason you're abandoning the Senn 600's? I've found that my 225's do a good job of complimenting my Senn 580's, they're vastly different in sound and they each do things that the other can't. Together, they really help me enjoy my CD collection way more than either 'phone by itself.

I owned the sr-325. It's not as bad as people make it out to be. I used it with detail heavy music and enjoyed it. I only sold it because I wanted more soundstage, and well, I was afraid of going deaf at 17 ( lots of detail + brightness = painful). But I have to admit, they were very addictive. Very.
