Using the SRH 840 with the udac there is major hiss, that gets louder as I turn the knob up, going from unoticible to very loud, 1/5 of the db of what I'm currently playing. Is this normal?

Hm...I find this to be odd...

I get hiss when I plug my headphones directly into my Macbook Pro, but with the uDAC I don't get hiss whatsoever. The Shures are pretty low impedance and there shouldn't be hissing... Try using a different USB port, or a different cable.

Have you posted in the Nuforce uDAC thread yet?

Or, maybe even give NuForce customer service a call.

That was actually great advice, I switched ports and the huge hiss was gone. I had never thought of that, since I thought USB devices were digital. I guess there is also the quality of the power to consider and that port was for some reason lacking.

Now the udac is awesome. The voices are so clear and I can see this owning my old dac707.

Glad you like the uDAC! I have one on its way. I was going to say, the power you are getting through the USB slot may differ from slot to slot. You may also be getting interference inside the computer next to those ports. If I ever experience those problems, I always have my USB/Firewire PCI card that should help isolate some of those problematic possibilities.

On another note, how are you finding the uDAC to affect the 840s sound compared to being unamped?

Without uDac
Smaller Soundstage
Recessed Mids
Weak Bass

I say this in a negative way as shures sound subpar and not worth it at all without a dac/amp combo. I would enjoy my friends ES7s more.

Glad youre uDAC is working properly now!

I really really enjoy mine. I use AD700 headphones, which are pretty darn neutral, and the uDAC really fills them out and gives it some body and low end. I liked the AD700s before, but now they are even more enjoyable.

The hissing was probably weird power output from the USB port (or bad grounding). My laptop had a similar problem. Got Dell to replace the power cable and hey presto, no problems
