I'm not sure if this is exactly relevant, but lately I've been noticing a weird, high-frequency noise whenever I'm around a TV set. This only seems to happen with CRT devices. I can't really remember if it was there before, and I was just wondering if anybody could enlighten me as to the nature of this noise. Thanks.

Very normal. All TV sets I've heard emit a quite loud high frequency noise, could be that I've only experienced crap TVs though

This is High Frequency noise generated by the Horizontal deflection circuits on televsions and CRT's. The Horizontal deflection controls a coil that makes the electron beam go ACROSS your screen. The Vertical section makes it go down your screen, but is at a much lower frequency.

The noise you hear is normal if at a low volume. The little inductors (coils of wire) in the unit move a little so you hear it. If a component is very loose or defective, the noise will get pretty loud. You will know something is worng then!

I think people here have missed the message behind this post. The fact that you're just noticing this tells me your ears are fatigued and becoming hypersensitive. Been wearing headphones a lot lately? I started noticing high frequency noise more just before I developed tinnitus. You need to give your ears some rest for a couple days before you ruin them.

Yikes. I'm always aware of the high pitched sound of TVs. Sometimes it gets to the point of really annoying me.

pbrain: That's the flyback transformer - it's almost impossible to make these thingies dead quiet for cheap, and in addition they usually degrade over time, too. What you can hear is mechanical vibration according to the horizontal/line frequency (14.something kHz for NTSC, 15.625 kHz for us PAL viewers over here). A lot of Grundigs had really lousy flyback transformers sometime between the mid 80s and mid 90s - I had to replace the one in my Grundig, too (not really a hard job to do oneself, but not recommended to amateurs due to high voltage hazards).

Greetings from Hannover!

I've always been able to hear this sound (and my brother can too)... Even if I'm in another room to the TV, I can tell if one gets switched on!

I guess thats one way to cure it, replace all your TV's with plasma screens and monitors with LCD

Right. Thanks to everybody for clearing that up for me. Incidentally, I've been walking around the house with E3c's plugged into my ears ever since I got them, but not necessarily with music coming out of them. It drives my mom nuts.

I've always heard this noise, its most evident when you have a RPTV that is on an input with no signal. I can tell if a tv is on from another room it is so loud to me sometimes.
