IEM's are my thing.. and I really wanted to buy a Susvara just for the experience;

But really I was confused ....

Do I need a headphone amp (when I have an old yamaha speaker amp with a headphone socket).

In the end today I bought a new mountain bike for the price of the Susvara which i really want to try....

Life is a compromise.

My mantra-m7 cost me GBP4k but I'm not getting much use out of that at the moment....

Thanks for the companionship but keep it real (I was thinking most of the grown ups are here before I get my head bitten off) ...

My iems and this website have very much contributed to my sanity over the last 12 months ....

Thanks for being here for me.

But you do have some weirdos in your ranks..

(but who the **** am I to tell you to get out and do more ...?)

Try the Susvara from your speaker amp first if you decide to get it one day. Don't think about new gear before.

Also, the bike is definitely the better buy. As much as I love the Susvara the value holds no candle against that bike and how it improves your wellbeing.

If one has a speaker amp already, it's a valid point to connect Susvaras to it first and see what happens.

Those running their Susvara from speaker amps, are you guys really careful about powering off the speaker amp before connecting or disconnecting your headphones? I haven't been but I watched the Abyss video on speaker amps and they were just going on and on about how dangerous it is and to make sure the amp is completely powered down before any connection or disconnection of headphones. I mindlessly plug/unplug while the amp is on, I have speaker cables to 4pin XLR female adapter.

Well even headphone amplifier manufacturers always recommend to power down the amp before plugging/unplugging the phones.
Given that the power surge of a speaker amp can be significantly higher, it seems obvious to me that one should not do it while powered on, just as safety precaution.

Even if it is unlikely that any damage will happen, risking to destroy headphones worth several grand is too much imo. It doesn't hurt to power down the amp before.

just my 2c

On my Luxman L-550 I luckily have a switch for turning on/off speaker's terminals so it's quite easy to plug the jacks to the Susvara (biding posts always being plugged in). Also I've developed a habit of checking if the volume is down always before/after a listening session.

I always turn off music, turn down volume, connect the headphone, play music

Same procedure for disconnecting. More steps than maybe needed but safe.

Also, do the same when connecting new source gear like DACs

If you are running off the Chord DAVE as a digital pre-amp to a speaker power amp, best to mute the DAVE before unplugging or re-plugging headphones, then you shouldn't need to power off the amp as there shouldn't be any signal going to the headphones.

If you are running of a Chord DAVE as a digital pre-amp to the speaker power amp, can also mute the DAVE so the amp isn't receiving a signal from the DAVE either.

At the end of the day, it's just an amp. Use the same precautions you would with any headphone amp.

That's too bad. I found the A90 worked great with the Susvara's.

The only thing I found was that the treble was a little shouty...but...with more break-in the A90 seemed tame that unpleasant treble.

I guess the other question is, what DAC/source was being used?

RME ADI-2 and Schiit Bifrost 2 I think.

I have used speaker amps for 5 years for all my headphones. Including some rather easy to drive like the LCD3 and HE1000se. I have never had any problem. I never power off my amp, but am always very careful and first stop the music and turn down volume all the way down and wait around 5 sec before disconnect any HP. I have a mute button on my amp and one on my DAC, which I use for extra extra protection because I have them but is probably not necessary if you do the other steps 100% correct.

Okay this is fine as long as we are talking about using solid state speaker amps. I would never disconnect headphones or speaker without power them off first with tube speaker amps as many tube amp must have load on their output or bad crap can happen.

Will be putting a deposit down via my local UK Hifiman Dealer for the Hifiman EF-1000 Amp in the next day or so to partner with my Susvara's and Chord DAVE with M Scaler & Chord Blu MK1.

Just awaiting for my Dealer to confirm if Hifiman can make the two DC power cables from the Power Unit to the Main Unit 1.5m long as opposed to the standard length of 1m as the Power Unit will go on a different shelf to the Main Unit some distance away in my UK home.

Then will need to wait with anticipation for 4 to 6 weeks for delivery of the EF-1000.

It will be interesting (as I am buying it cold without a demo due to non availability of a demo unit in the UK as apparently they are built to order) how the Susvara's will sound with their official partnering amp, hopefully at their best (I sure hope so, with the serious coin it is costing ! Will be on bread and jam next 6 months lol :relaxed:)

Will be interested to hear your impressions. Pretty ballsy move to spend that kind of scratch without an audition.
