HiFiMan Susvara

I think, if you can get your hands on one, the THX is definitely worth a try!
So do you think the HeadAmp GX-mini will be an adequate amp for the Susvara combined with the DAVE HMS combo? I am uncertain how this amp will take the single ended DAVE output and make it balanced to the headphone. The preorder add suggests that it is a good amp for non-power hungry headphones but not sure if it will be a good pairing with the SUSVARA. I can get a good price on the Susvara GX-mini package from HeadAmp.

a word to the wise, the susvara needs serious power...i suggest before you buy you test it out because underpowering your susvara will not allow you to appreciate it......

Heard the Susvara's out of Soundaware P1 today vs. my ican PRO setup and will say the susvara sounds better out of the P1 vs. the iCan. In direct A/B testing the P1 were clearly better in detail retrieval and overall clarity that made the susvara more eStat like, and I can say that because i was A/B'ing against my Jade II's. In contrast the ican + susvara had a slight haze to it when in any of the tube mode. When I listened via SS mode then the clarity and details are closer, but not in a refined way. Sounded more harsh, and the mid's suffered a bit. For the price I would definitely at least give the P1's a try if someone is on the fence.

On the other hand, the weakness in iCan is actually a strength when powering my Jade II's, so as with all things, pairing is everything in this game!

The GSX-MK2 to my ears is a bit bright and cold / thin sounding. I didn't like it so much on the Abyss or the LCD4s. I would suggest the Violectric V281. Solid and great dynamics, warmish but detailed, huge soundstage. And running it balanced out is magical. Plenty of power as well. Plus lots of options for gain, balance control, can be used as a pre-amp. Really, for the money it is unbeatable IMO.

That said, I have never heard a headphone as good as the 009 until the Susvara, for my tastes. They are definitely on the same level. I can’t say that about any other headphone I’ve tried.

Yeah, there's something special about Susvaras. These cans grow on you nicely and the more listening time is spent, the better they are...

@bluesaint That's a lovely stack!

I returned the Susvara, as much as it pains me to say. While I loved them, I discovered a pretty significant channel imbalance favoring the left.

Didn't pick up on it for the first few hours as I was listening to mostly tracks without vocals, but after I did it was unmistakable. Tried driver sweeps, mono tracks, and swapping of earpieces to confirm.

Rightly or wrongly I have been hesitant with hifiman over build quality, and decided not to exchange them as I didn't want to play the driver lottery on a $6k headphone. It's a shame because they really are something special.

Another user a while back complained of the same thing and even sent his in. Later he determined that it was an issue with his amp. Hifiman listens to all their Susvara's before shipping. Have you tried different cables and use it with another amp or different input?

Yes; Tried different amps, different sources. and also re-tested all my headphones (outside of my Staxes) with that amp to rule that out - and ensure I wasn't going crazy.. Tried both sets of cables as well, unfortunately.

Could definitely be a flukey thing. And it wasn't a gross imbalance. I estimate it at about 1 db given the amount needed to correct it (and that the image stays put in mono after swapping the headphone around on my ears). Imbalance was in the vocal frequency range - which made it especially bothersome.

It's something I'm incredibly sensitive to with all my headphones - and something others may not notice. At that cost, however, it's good to know they listen to each set. it's impossible to know what happened to mine. For what it's worth, I listened to a pair at CanJam today that didn't display the issue at all.

A small imbalance can be fixed if your amp has a balance control. My V281 has and I use it as my ears are not 20/20, the right is down a bit....

I think these headphones are next on my purchase list. They were phenomenal on the setups I tried. Such a pleasant out of the head sound experience and so smooth! I love them.

Yes it would work. I heard the Susvara with the GX mini at Can Jam and it sounded good. I had the volume knob on a little less than half at a decent volume.
