HIFIMAN Shangri-La: The New Electrostatic Headphones From HIFIMAN

Actually, this the one issue I did have previously that I mentioned in I think this thread or another. An intermittent very low level distortion, that has pretty much gone away. I believe @BassicScience detected it a few times as well when I loaned them to him. Every now and then it comes back shortly, but it's very rare, which is why it just slipped my mind.
I did detect an intermittent hissing sound in your SGL on one of the channels, but that was clearly noise, and not a signal distortion. It was also below 16 kHz, as I can't hear that high anymore. FWIW, I heard a similar sound from one of the channels of my SGL Junior shortly after I purchased it, but HifiMan exchanged it quickly for a new unit, and it hasn't been an issue since. Estats (and their amps) seem more prone to niggling issues than other driver types. Understandable given the high voltages involved.

Thanks for the distinction. And that's totally correct, it was low level noise, not distortion across any frequency range. And if it had continued, I definitely would've sent it in like you did yours. And also agree, many of the issues I've had with stats, I've simply not had with non-stats.

I finally could audition the Shangri La Sr on its own amplifier.
The staging airyness and detail were impressive, however it lacked bass compared to all other high end estat setups.

Namely:
- Sennheiser HE1
- Warwick Arperio
- X9000 on Feliks Estat prototype
(- Immanis on Envy AE)

The Shangri La Mini was dissapointing.
It feels cheap in hand and sounds tinny and thin. (It doesn't look bad though)

I don't know the price but even for 1k I'd rather get one of their planar offerings

Yeah, the general opinion is to not use the Shangri-La Senior energizer, especially for its price.
I think the Shangri-La Mini is just a repurposed Jade 2, in my opinion the Junior isn't even that competitive when the same company makes Susvara.

Yeah the Mini might be a repurposed Jade 2. I also had an interesting Chat with the Hifiman rep about the frequent revisions and reasons behind that.

Regarding the Shangri La Jr. I agree it's no competition for the Susvara, but at the same time doesn't cost nearly as much.

7k for Susvara alone vs 8k for Shang Jr + Energizer. The headphones alone are like 4k

It is very difficult to sell a senior shangri,
especially since you have to part with your amp too...
I parted ways with my Stax 9000 because this weekend I'm going to listen to the new Susvara and the Immanis...and you never know , everyone seems excited about the Immanis...

One can buy a Shang Sr. without the HiFiMan amp.

Just TBH, I would step over z10e for shang, but I do at least think the can is worth while on it. Personaly, I would get Z10e + x9k to start (should be less than shang alone) and then save up for shang. Once you are ready, sell x9k and buy shang. That will get you a far far far better interum experience than shang on a cheap amp IMO, and will also already be a pretty substantial step above your current sus chain.

Also, just so I say it, I realy think you should do the z10e x9k chain first, but I also think you should up your dac before going shang as well. Even just with your current setup you will see a substantial improvement by stepping up the dac. If you are willing for that to be your first move it is what I would personally upgrade first.
This was a while ago, but I'm in a similar position with a z10e incoming and considering Shang Snr/X9000 options.

I have a Stax L700 waiting trial at home but I'm still a few weeks out from my LTA arriving, so doing a bit of digging in the meantime.
Why would you recommend X9000 before Shang, just out of interest? I've been told that the z10e might possibly bottleneck Shang a little.

This would be paired with a Lampizator Atlantic-TRP 3, btw.

Not the OP but reading back through the threaded messages he was responding to, the original inquiry was related to SR running off an inexpensive (~1k) amp and inexpensive DAC. The OP suggested the Z10 & 9K combo rather than spending the budget all on the SR.

Based on your signature, you're not in that category.

Ah apologies, I must have come into the thread too late/not paid attention. Thank you!

I've actually just reached out to Hifiman out of interest to see what their response is to finding a decently priced unit.

I have the SR headphone only version that I purchased from a USA dealer. There is certainly room for negotiation, as with most/all Hifiman offerings.

Reached out to Hifiman about sourcing Shang Snr and got a reply a few hours later saying that a rep in the UK is going to be in touch apparently. Classy service so far I must say.
