I decided to do this modification for my HE-400. I went and got a meshed Letter-tray, only to realize that there was raised regions in it to help the papers sit better, I guess. Would this cause a change in sound, or should I do this mod with something else (and waste the money I used to buy this). If it'll probably change the sound negatively, then that's fine. However, I don't want to go buy something else if it will make a difference in sound quality.

EDIT:

I decided to go for it. I didn't realize this post was a few weeks old, otherwise I wouldn't have asked. It ended up working, and (thought not perfectly flat) I bent the lines into submission. It does sound better with this adjustment, if not quite as professional looking.

Thanks! :)

is it absolutely necessary to have a screen? how hard would you have to poke the driver to damage it? obviously you wouldn't want debris in the drivers, but couldn't you just stretch some thin transparent material like pantihose or something over the cover ring and glue it on? i just got my he-400s and love them the way they are, not to mention my girlfriend would probably die if she saw them disassembled. i don't want to get into a battle with myself over which steel mesh/fabric combo will best hifiman's engineering if it can be avoided, but the temptation is strong.

Honestly if you only listen to your cans in an indoor environment and don't travel with them, I would strongly recommend that you forego the dust screen and just have a bare steel mesh for the best SQ. Any fabric on the grill side of the headphones will give the sound a slight veil (relative to without of course) and decreased airiness.

The drivers are resistant to house dust, I've not had any trouble at all just using them at home. It is only when you use them on-the-go or backpack with them often that it might be worth it to sacrifice the SQ for a little dust/sand protection.

Just regrilled my HE-6...

Combined with my damping on the front side, these are practically dark sounding now.

Not to sound stupid but how do I take the stock grills off at the first place? I would like to take the fabric out for better SQ.

Here you go, a guide posted by the Hifiman boss himself (yes his hands are very delicate

I'm doing this soon, what could I order that hasa good air/steel ratio and a good piece of cloth?

I just want to make a note that the effects of removing the grill on the HE-6 are more prominent than the HE-500.

Visit your local hardware store and see what's available as screen material. Or try the office supply shop and look at letter trays/garbage cans/etc made from wire mesh.

Now when you say it's resistant to house dust, what about those tiny powder particles? Like flour for example?
Just don't pour flour on your headphones...

Haha, well.. I had this pile of glucose powder on my table and accidentally blew on it, making it spread all over my table. I think a tiny bit of it might accidentally got onto the headphones, which is why I got paranoid.. :D
Oh, I see... maybe a thicker mesh?
