Hifiman RE272: Review
Sep 24, 2011 at 1:52 AM Post #109 of 273

You guys don't get it, for anyone that has $250 to spare, this IEM will satisfy them totally.

The CK10 and ER-4S are in the same price category, and all three are on pretty simliar levels of sound quality.

If anything is overpriced, it's the RE0, not this one.

:)

LOL.

Alright, back on topic. I found the included bi-flanges best. Have you tried the sony hybrids?

I don't think ER4S is as good as RE272. I don't think RE0 is overpriced at all because there is no way RE272 is anywhere near 3 times better. Haven't heard CK10, but no other dual driver BA I tried can compete with RE272.

RE272 is the most bass anemic IEM I have ever heard in my life.  Basically unacceptable at that pricepoint. Any IEM that makes an ER4 sound bloated and muddy is problematic to say the least.   I would take the W2 over ER4 or RE272 in a heartbeat.

Either RE272 or my brain has changed after burning in - I do not like ER6-14F anymore on RE272, they tame highs too much. I found that wearing RE272 upside down helps to get deep fit with many rubber tips. Now my 3 best tips for RE272 are:

From left to right, in order of preference.
  • Unknown tips with narrow inner tube. I can not recall where I got them, sorry. These provide most balanced sound, no frequency stands out.
  • Stock mid-sized tips from RE272. These tilt sound to the brighter, very same to ER-4P signature.
  • Shure black rubber tip for E2C. Both bass and highs become stronger, sound is fun but less accurate

Deep fit and perfect seal are must for RE272 to unveil all its goodness. See funny pic below to learn how deep RE272 should go:

Sony hybrids sound thin and lifeless. I have no Complys here, but I tried MTPC foam tips. They sound good but are not easy for me to insert.

I am listening to HM602 > RE272 > Etymotic ER6-14F foams* and smiling happily.

Thanks for the feedback kostalex, I also found that stock double flange tips (with proper seating/fit) would give more balanced low/high but hate the trouble of insertion, reverse the L/R channels and over the ears wearing. Wish the the tips have convenience of wearing like Sony hybrid but sound quality of stock double flange.
So next outstanding question is in Comply tip vs stock double flange tip. Hope some headfier has tried this and tell the diffrence.

Musicality:
RE272 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ER-4S

Agreed, but this one is totally subjective.

Imaging/layering/seperation+soundspace:
ER-4S >>>>>> RE272 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> RE0

I agree that ER4S has better separation than the RE272, but I totally disagree with pretty much everything else here. RE0 IMO has better separation than the RE272 and is very close to the ER4S in this regard. RE0 is also very close to RE272 in imaging and I sometimes prefer RE0 over RE272 for imaging. RE272 has a more realistic sense of space, better layering with better depth than the ER4S IMO. ER4S sounds too flat by comparison, with little depth and little layering, but great separation indeed.

Openness and crystal clear highs:
ER-4S >>>>> RE272

I think RE272 has better highs than the ER4S - cleaner and smoother/more delicate with similar or even better detail resolution.

Vocals:
RE272 >>>>>> ER-4S

Agreed, although Etymotics are also really excellent with vocals.

Attack and Decay:
ER-4S >>>>>>>>>>>>> RE272

Umm, I think RE272 also has very nice, quick, clean decay. I actually think ER4 decays sounds too quickly, ending up sounding somewhat schematic/castrated.

Emotion:
RE272 > CK10 >>>> ER-4S

Agreed. ER4S sounds too dry and thin by comparison.

Aenemia:
RE272 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ER-4S

Yep, ER4 also has less bass to my ears. Or, more precisely, less bass body/fullness.

Stridency:
ER-4S >>>>>>> RE272

Are you serious?! I think RE272 sounds quite a bit smoother than Etymotics and is certainly less prone to sibilance to these ears.

Sibilance:
ER-4S >> RE272

I hardly heard any sibilance at all from RE272. Heard quite a bit more from ER4S, while the ER4P was unbearably harsh to my ears in the treble with a lot of music.

You reversed the last 3, I'm implying the RE272 has the most aenemia, the ck10 has the most sibilance, and the ck10 has the most stridency.

Musicality is not "totally subjective", it might be more subjective than most other variables, but a lot of people will agree on which IEM's are more musical and less musical than others.

I stopped listening to the RE0 and sold it for $35 because it's the most garbage hyped IEM on head-fi.
