Gonna be in the market for this headphone soon. Should I get this? A modded HD800? SR009? What?

In my opinion: At this price point ($1500 or double that and then rapidly increasing from there, especially with requisite amplifiers and sources factored in) it's absolutely imperative to listen for yourself before buying.

I don't think it's necessary to spend huge money to get great sound.  It helps (in most cases, I think) but I don't think it's absolutely necessary.

For your wallets sake don't read this review:)

Oh I read the whole thing! Should I part ways with my Burson soloist? Very very tempting.
What a great read. I have the HD 800's and the 281 violectric sounds like an awesome fit.
Better start saving. I've wanted that amp for a while now...
Anyway. I bet the HE 1000's would just kill with the v-281 along with a substantial DAC like ether a chord cute DAC or an ARCAM irDAC. Wow. I wish I was going to CANJAM London this year. :flushed:

Or the soon to be released Violectric V850 DAC. They would match  I'm thinking about it for sure. There is a sale on their site right now. 15% off the V281

Could very well be. On the other hand, Chord's Dave is just a few days away. Much «cheaper» and maybe comparable in sound quality.

So why are the things hooked up to the HE1000 so darn big???  HE1000 is so capable that it makes anything sound great.  Here is MY setup, with an iPod Shuffle driving the HE1000 (it's as small as the jack on the headphone cord!):

Funny!

But I've also noticed that both X3 II and X5 II can drive the HE1000 surprisingly well, better than the HD 800 – in terms of the sonic result.
