HIFIMAN HE-R10 Closed-Back Headphones Discussion & Impressions

I believe bass & R10P is a very controversial topic. It reminds me a lot of D9200 and its bass. There are plenty of people that would swear that D9200 has plenty of bass, both in quality and quantity. Then there are other people (me included) who go like: "What bass?".

I must have at least 500 hours on R10P, I've listened to it from all kinds of sources and I mean there is bass, it is present, but it's definitely not the star of the show for me (I feel the exact same way about D9200).

R10P is an excellent headphone; for me it's one of the best closed-backs, but the way I hear it, bass is definitely not its strength.
I’m with you here. Even the Audivina has more bass than the HE-R10P, no matter the source, power etc. Someone here said that the HE-R10P has more bass than Z1R lmao.
Don’t waste your time arguing. Like you said, the HE-R10P is an amazing pair of phones and it’s my daily driver but bass is not one of its strengths.

In the end, this hobby is very subjective.

Absolutely absurdly false. Want mine?

Wrong again. On both counts.

Sure, many things are (nuances of different DACs, amps, cables, etc.). Bass, for the reasons I articulated above, is not one of them if you know what you’re doing.

My R10Ps should be in today. I'm pretty excited. Hopefully they don't get here too late, because I'm back to work tomorrow.

Does the stealth version of the R10P use the same cable pinout as the Aryas/Sundaras/HE1000, or the R9/R10D?

Dual 3.5, like the former. Congratulations! You’ll love ‘em! (Especially if you got them during the recent sale!)

IMHO, the R10P is worth the price of admission, even at $5k, but people should understand that once you get around that price level, the law of diminishing returns starts to kick in pretty hard. At $1599, it’s a no-brainer.

Well, the R9 and R10D are dual 3.5 as well, but their pinout is different from other Hifimans just because you have the option of a single-ended entry. Just want to make sure I don't burn out my amp, or even worse the headphones, if I use my nice Tripowin cable with them.

I'm excited to see how they sound. I really don't know what to expect, but if I got something between the R10D and the LCD-3 I'd be over the moon.

Oh, these trounce the LCD-3. I think you’re gonna love ‘em!

Yiss, they got here. First impressions: very middy. Quite surprised, actually, thought they might take after the R10D more, in that the mids are sorta a second thought. The original R10 was famous for its mids, so it shouldn't be super surprising to me. Still, pleasant surprise.

Soundstage is gargantuan for a closed-back. A clear step-up from the R10D, which itself has a damned good soundstage. Great imaging, too. Every instrument is very clearly defined in the space; I'd almost say it sounds like each individual instrument is getting its own speaker. Hah. Maybe not the most three-dimensional sound I've heard, but it's still plenty respectable.

Detail retrieval is absolutely world-class. They best my HD800S, which is a true feat. I actually found this out because I initially thought there was a cup resonance with these. In one song I was listening to I could hear a pretty pronounced ringing, and immediately was concerned. For kicks I pulled the H800S out to A/B with these, and with some extra concentration I could hear it in them as well.

My only real issue with these so far is they have some pretty sizzly treble, in certain frequencies. It's not present with every song, but when it is it can be pretty unpleasant. Curious to see if it will dull over time, or if I'll get used to it.

I also have to give major props to Hifiman for not simply including a manual, but making it a hard cover with dust jacket. It's almost arrogant, but I love it to death. I wouldn't be shocked to find that if for future runs of this headphone on discount they drop the leather-wrapped box and manual, though.

Some more random thoughts:

It's kinda funny to me that the R9 and R10D have cup resonance, but for different frequencies. While the R9 has some pretty substantial bass resonance, the R10D fixes that, in large part by just having less deep bass. In exchange, it gets mid range resonance that the R9 doesn't have. The R10P, comes along and gets rid of all of it. I'm assuming extra damping and cup rigidity is what's a play there. I guess you'd expect the resonance to get fixed on a $5500 headphone, though.

Additionally, the R10P might have perfect bass. I still don't have a 100% perfect picture of it; that just takes time to listen to all my music, but so far I'm really liking what I'm hearing. There's definitely a rise above neutral, albeit less than the R9's, but it goes super low like the R9's, and unlike the R10D's. It has a really good sense of weight that only those last 20-40hz can add. It's something I've missed very much while listening to the LCD-3.

Congrats ! My exact impressions when I got the R10P as well. The treble peak is not nearly as bad as the Z1R and it goes away after a day or two of listening.

Congratulations!
I had the same thing. Give them 30 hours of burn-in and it will go away. From 50 to 70 hours of burn-in, their sound signature will change. The sound will become less detailed and dark, don't be scared, move on. After 150 hours of burn-in, everything will more or less even out. I have 240 hours of burn-in since purchasing and there are still slight changes in their sound signature.
One thing is already clear to me, these are some of the best closed headphones out there (if not the best at this point in time).
They really sound very cool, with a good source and amplification!

Maybe I finally found the sound I've been looking for.

👍👍👍:beerchug:

If you want to see its peak bass performance, give those lower frequencies a bump while simultaneously increasing the power (clean power, not overstretching an amp using high gain) commensurate with the amount of the increase. You should hear the bass I get using EQ and powering them with my Volot!! Now, at 100db sensitivity, do these cans need the Volot to sound good? Of course not…but it’s incredible what they can do with that power!
