Agree with you about the HE-6, great sound but too heavy for any serious listening time and amp requirement are better served with speaker taps IMO.

Yeah, I love the way it sounds, but there are just so many options out there today that are more comfortable and easier to amp that sound just as good.

"options" such as?

I use that Casebudi for all of my larger headphones and it works great.
Would go XXL for the 400i as they are pretty snug in the XL.

Are you looking for a headphone that is different from what you currently have?  Looking at your profile I have pretty much all of those so if I were to get something to add to your current collection I would be looking for something with a different signature from what you currently have.
These would be my suggestions:
1.  a mid level STAX setup
2.  HD-800 or HD-800S, along with a amp that will do them justice, m9xx is good but for me its tubes for HD-800/S
3.  HE-560 or HE-1K along with a amp
4.  A mid-high end Grado, RS2e, PS-500e or GS-1K

Ordered a 400i. Was looking for DAC/Amp suggestions for it.

I use  An Xduoo X3 LO to a fiio Q1. Should this suffice for my portable listening needs? (By portable I mean around the house and studio)

Desktop DAC/Amp suggestions are also welcome, nothing too pricey though, 200-250$ would be perfect.

Preferences: I listen to a wide variety of music. detailed music with a bit of warmth, neutral laid back presentation I enjoy both.

TIA

Well, my HE-400i are no more. I hope the new owner enjoys them as much as I did- and finds a replacement for that annoyingly stiff stock cable. They were the latest revision, in extremely good condition, so not a bad pair at all.

For people wondering if the HE-400i is worth it- yes, they're a great entry point into the crazy world of planars. Easy to drive, nice accessible tuning, surprisingly light. Weirdly good all-round, especially at the price- very little to touch them other than modded HD650, of course- but then lots of people enjoy the contrast between their planars and dynamics :)

Speaking of the new owner, he is not that bothered by the cable to be fair, see how we go with that:wink: 400i in very good condition too as stated, thumbs up.

Something I have found is I'm able to use alot more volume on these compaired to the shure 1540 and t-90, on the fostex HP-A8. With the t-90 treble could prevent listening a bit louder on this amp but generally a reasonable pairing IF recording decent. The 1540 paired well with the fostex but could sometimes be over the top bass wise.( Using CD transport by the way).
Now to the 400i, I have enjoyed these from the start, nice non fatiguing highs and deep controlled lows, you know the kind of sound where you want to up the volume......well believe it or not the fostex does not want to give you much more, whilst still maintaining the same slam and depth, You get a situation where everything becomes louder and the bass can't keep up. I have not owned any planer headphones before but doubt you phone would power these well. I'll be looking into a more powerful SS amp next year anyway, that will be dependent on what dynamic driver HP's I buy next, or planer I guess after this experience.

Well, the Aune X1s is a very good dac/amp and it would pair well with the 400i...

Since your Xduoo already has a DAC you could save some money by just getting a desktop amp.

As an owner of a 400i and somebody who participated in the X1S review tour, I can attest to that. Though I think the 400i pairs at least well with almost everything, unless there is a serious synergy problem or if the amp is woefully underpowered.

Utopia, HD800, HD800S, T1, LCD3. I have no idea what your budget is and I have no idea what sound you're after. But all of those sound as good as the HE6, but without the HE6's issues with comfort and amping.
