Afaik DSD upsampling is a specialist function and quite rare on DAPs. Not even sure the R52 will have the horsepower to be honest.
So you're saying every dap manufacturer is listing dsd support specs because DSD upsampling is a specialist function thats not available on most daps? Might as well list their devices as capable of dsd1024 if no one is going to ever use it.

Its not a "specialist" function and works fine on other daps that I've seen. Fiio even has an "all to dsd" function. DSD upsampling even works fine with my crappy shanling UA2 dongle.

They really shouldn't advertise this if it doesn't work out of the box.

If you've never used dsd upsampling, you're missing out. This is quite disappointing.

The R52 can support the playback of DSD256 .dsf files, but it can't upsample non-DSD files to DSD. AFAIK the FiiO "All to DSD" is the only actual DSD upsampling function. Most/All other players just support the playback of DSD .dsf files.

As far as I understand it, the upsampling is software based. ie Fiio's all to dsd is a button.

The hardware spec just needs to be capable of dsd. Thats why you need a specific player capable of it, ie Onkyo hf player, usapp, jriver, audirvana, hqplayer, etc.

Yes, notice same on a track I'm familiar with too.
Ok... I updated the firmware and have just been listening for the past 2 hours or so and I think you're right. Hiby has done something to the tuning of the R5G2--something very good. I have no complaints about its sound now. All of the dry, edgy timbre I was hearing before is gone without a trace and the soundstage in Class A balanced mode has become very impressive. It streches out wide with excellent layering and sounds very natural and real now. I don't think I'm just imagining it. Would be great if someone from Hiby would join the conversation and let us know what exactly changed beyond what's in the firmware update notes. Now I have a dilemma. I was in the process of selling or returning it in favor of my N3Pro, but the R5G2 sound so good now I don't know what I'm going to do. Good problem to have, I guess!

Forgot to mention... It sounds so good now, I have no need to make any adjustments in MSEB.

A couple of bothersome things I have noticed though...

1 - Gapless playback in the Hiby Music app isn't gapless. There's a very short space between tracks--very short, but still not smooth and gapless.
2 - When streaming music via bluetooth from another device to the R5G2, the play/pause, skip forward, skip back buttons don't work.
3 - Sometimes when I push a button to adjust volume the volume jumps more than 1 numerical value at a time. Especially seems true with the case on.
4 - Actually, all the buttons are harder to use with the case on.

This DAP is growing on me, though. Would really love to see that gapless issue fixed.

Correction: Gapless playback in the Hiby Muisc app isn't gapless on some of my music, but not all. Was listening to my FLAC rip of Alive in America by Steely Dan and it has gaps between tracks, but Live in Paris by Diana Krall is gapless. Gonna have to investigate more. Never had an issue with this on my other DAPs.

Someone mention to use Jet Audio HD Plus app and i took their advice. I am a fan of it. Gapless is true gapless. I love the functions this app. Give it a try.

It sounds so good now I'm rethinking even buying an Sony 1AM2 as a 2nd DAP!

I re-ripped the problem cd, so we can strike complaint number one off the list. Seems like it was a bad rip.

I'm not familiar with what R player and DTA is.

I'm not sure what you're saying here, what would need recoding? Isn't it natively capable of DSD256?

I use DSD upsampling in jriver to listen to music with my desktop setup but I'm not able to get DSD upsampling to work in Jriver with the R5g2 when used as a usb dac either.

What can I do to get DSD upsampling to work?
R player = the R series player you're holding
DTA = Direct transport architecture, what is responsible for bit perfect playback of your music from 3rd party apps.

It does not include DSD, so third party apps need to be coded specifically foe your player, in order for DSD to play back natively.

We have been in periodic contact with Neutron devs about this but it seems their player is not working with the r5 gen2 for DSD just yet, going by what you say.

Can you play a DSD album to confirm, that it's not an issue specific to resampling to DSD?
