I could use some advice. I am going on a business trip in June and would like to take some headphones with me to listen to music from my laptop in my down time. I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination and not looking to be spendy.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD518 I originally am thinking of taking, but I find them a tiny bit too much on the warm sounding side. I like the bass and mid bass they have, the mids are alright as well, but the highs take a dive at 9kHz and come back way late. While they do sound nice and are very comfortable to wear they are not the clearest sounding cans. (I also have a pair of AKG K7xx, but they are not good travelers and kind of disappointing in some respects. I have a pair of Takstar Pro 80 as well, but they aren’t coming out from under lock and key so to speak. Very rare cans now and sound great in spite of their lack of comfort, especially for what they cost. How I ended up with so many headphones over the years is beyond me, because I do not like headphones. They are just a necessary evil sometimes).

Anyway, I am looking for something that will give me a slightly more balanced sound than my Senn HD518s while maintaining clean bass, good mids and highs without being fatiguing. I don’t want to spend a lot of money for something I am likely to use for 3 days and then discard unless it has much to warrant keeping, so I am trying to keep it around $100 or less.
I was thinking about perhaps one of these choices:
Superlux HD668B
Beyerdynamic DT440
Phillips SHP9500
Audio Technica AUD ATHAD500X
Symphonized Wraith 2.0
Audio Technica ATH-M40x

If all of these are 100% lateral moves or notably worse in some areas compared to my HD518, then getting different cans is not the answer.

If that turns out to be the case, perhaps getting a portable amp will improve things with my HD518s. There are plenty for not much money. If an amp is the answer, would I do well with one of these choices?
Topping NX2
Audiophile CMOY
FiiO A3
Nobsound Mini Portable
Nobsound DAC ASIO
FiiO E10K Olympus 2

I’m looking for advice that is beyond cheerleading. Of course, I expect opinion because audio is 99% subjective, but I could not get measurements on any of the headphones above except the Superlux, so if someone has knowledge of the others, it would also be helpful so I could compare to my HD518s.  Of course, comfort is very important as well. I think most headphones I would choose would be of decent comfort at least except some Monoprice ones I tried and my Takstars which are not that comfy for someone who wears glasses such as myself. Other than that, you will note that all the choices I listed are “around the ear” style. That is because there is no such thing as a comfortable “on-ear” style and don’t get me started about earbuds. Thank you.

You list both open and closed headphones. Do you have a preference?

Hmm, so much for Head-Fi. I knew forums were not the place to go for help or advice on anything.
I guess I'll just bring my Senn HD518s and hope they work with my laptop, otherwise I am going to be bat-**** bored in my down time. Hopefully I might have work to do if this doesn't pan out.
Thanks

I like the new AKG K92 (has a dell at 1700 Hz and another at about 3 KHZ, but still sounds good) and the M40X quite a lot. There is also the Philips SHP9500, which is a very good open can that is a terrific value for the money. You might read about those you have not already done so for and see what you think. It's possible one might work for you. There is also the AD900X, but it could be sort of a sidegrade.   ---)

Superlux HD330 - has a lot of bass but has peaks in the treble and midrange. Basically a Grado SR60 with a lot of bass. Packaging doubles as carrying case.

I was thinking about perhaps one of these choices:

Get the Focal Spirit Classic while it's on sale on Amazon since Focal wheeled out a replacement model.

You might not need an amp with the Spirit Classic unless your smartphone or laptop really sucks. But if you'd get one, I'd get the Fiio Q1. In case there's noise via USB you can always disable charging while listening. Not a 100% solution but more often that not it works.

Thanks Protege, but we can not get the Superlux HD330 in the US. I also think the Superlux HD668B will best the HD330. The HD668B has a good deal of bass and a peak in the highs, but not may not be quite as pronounced as the HD330. I don't know as I have not seen any graphs on the HD330.

The Focal headphones are too expensive to be used for 3 days and discarded. I also have no idea how they graph.

I wonder how the FiiO Q1 compares to the Fiio A3 and E10K?

I'm seriously considering the Superlux HD668b if I were to purchase a pair of cans. I already know I will need an amp for those (and just about any cans). However, I will also need EQ adjustment just in case the bass is not to my liking or even just to balance them out.
What I will be using is my laptop playing wav or FLAC files and CDs. I run windows 10 and will be using the media player. Do I get the EQ from the media player or do I need to find an amp with EQ?

Ok, figured something out. Rather than chase ghosts in headphones, I should just take my Senn HD518s, purchase an amp to use with my laptop and use some EQ.
Question is which amp to go with and I will need to see if there is EQ in the windows 10 media player.

There's some site that sells cheap electronics but I can't recall right now. Otherwise, make the most out of Customs agents who don't hamper online commerce.

I also haven't seen something that some people are sure exists, but before I get censored on Head-Fi again, just have a look at the graphs.

You didn't make it clear they would be "discarded" after, thought you'd keep them since you're getting an amp to use with them also, if at least stash the headphones away for when you go on trips.

When I travel I always take my Bose QC20 noise canceling earphones.  May be a bit above your budget at $300 (I thought so too before I got them) but they are very nice sounding (really) besides having the noise canceling feature (extremely useful on planes and also good at giving a nearly silent background for the music in other situations).

There is a good review of them on the inner fidelity site.

I don't need noise canceling and that is too much money for something that would be used once.

Ok, experimented with my laptop and Senn HD518s plugging straight in. Not bad results, then found the EQ for windows media player and was able to bend the headphones to my will.
So now what I am wondering is how much of an improvement an amp might offer to perhaps clean things up a bit more or not.
So instead of a dac/amp combo I can get away with just an amp.
Right now I am looking at the following:

Creative Soundblaster E1
Audio Technica AT-PHA10
Topping NX2
FiiO A3

I decided a CMOY was not for me after closer inspection.

So which one of those would be best to go with?
Of course if there are other options I do not know about in the same range or if getting an amp won't make a notable difference please let me know.

Thank you
