In the current issue there's a piece about when the author first heard them in 1991/92 at a trade fair.He only heard them for about 2 minutes in a very noisy environment but said that if he'd had £10,000 at the time he would have bought them striaght away.

I loved the Orpheus. I thought it was out of this world. However, I think that the 600's with equinox cable and Cary 300SEI as a headphone amp give the Orpheus a run for the money.

I heard the HE-90 at a recent meet, but only long enough to get a quick impression (true of most of what I listened to, which included the Senn HD580, 600, Stax SR007, HP-1000 and others). My first impression was of awesome front-to-back imaging... it clearly sounded like certain instruments were way back on the stage, and others were right up front playing near me (and everywhere in between, of course). The illusion was more realistic than anything I've heard yet through a pair of headphones. This was through one of zzz's electrostatic amps.

Could be that some of it was due to zzz's amp, of course... strictly speaking this wasn't an Orpheus system. Anyway I wouldn't take any audio reviewer at face value, IMHO they can get a bit overzealous about stuff they like.

Unfortunately I listened to the SR007 for an even shorter time than the Orpheus. Personally I liked the Orpheus better, but all I heard through either was classical (and at a rather low volume with the meet going full blast in the background). If I'm lucky enough to make it to another meet with both these cans, I'll try to give them both a better audition.
