I am also planning to buy an amp if I go with the DT880. Which one is the best buy or absolutely must have?

You can only get the HF-1's now, but you can get the 880's whenever you want, so...

If you have ANY desire to try a Grado....NOW is the time to buy it....you can always sell the HF-1 later. DT880's will always be around.

I would also echeo what has been mentioned earlier, get the HF-1 because it will be limited. If you end up not liking them you can always turn them around and sell them and get the DT880s later.

I'm getting the DT880. Grado's quality sucks big time. I must admit that all these great reviews about how the HF-1 sounds have raise my interest in them. But I still have my SR60 here with one side not working and Grado wants to charge me to get them fixed.

Yeah, but the portable pimeta or SM3 will be good enough

fante7 was the closest to the correct answer.

Standard head-fi procedure:

1) Order both, convincing self that one of them will be returned.
2) Listen to one. Fall in love. Listen to the other. Fall in lust.
3) Agonize between love and lust.
4) Develop ulcer, or at least hyperacidity.
5) Clock runs out on return period.
6) Sigh of relief, at least the ordeal is over.
7) Feelings of guilt.
8) Hmmmm...need an amp
9) Narrow field to 2 models
10) GO TO step 1

Have fun

I have the DT880, SR60 and MS1. The DT880 pretty much cured me from any upgraditis. It really blew the SR60 and MS1 out of the water (but it is of course an unfair comparison) that I had to get another complementary cans for my office. Settled on the HD580 and now my SR60 and MS1 are not getting any use!

My long and short is, owning DT880 just made me impervious to all these HF-1 hype. No biggie in my books..

[EDIT]: Hmmm...just wondering, is the HF-1 THAT much better to justify almost double the cost from a HD580 (USD$139 from CompuPlus.com)? Personally, I cannot imagine so as the HD580 is already a pair of awsome AWSOME cans.

[EDIT2]: I personally think that high end Grado cans are very pricey. In fact, the only "bang for the buck" in the Grado line is the SR60. I think it is CRAZY to have RS-1 priced at about USD$700 and the RS2 priced at USD$500 when you have cans like the HD650 at USD$307 (CompuPlus.com) and DT880 at USD$225 (BHPhoto).

It's not double the cost, the HF-1 is $200.

I think it's just a matter of opportunity cost. The SR225's are widely praised as great $200 headphones, and the same price, the HF-1 is supposedly a noticeable improvement. So it's one of the bargains of the Grado line. Being a limited run, now is the time to jump on the bandwagon if you even had the slightest intention of EVER getting another Grado.

Also, the HD580 is about as opposite a sound to the HF-1/Grado's as can be.

If I didn't have my 880 and SR-225, I would have been all over the HF-1 like there was no tommorrow
