Hi everyone,

another recommendation thread :P

So, straight to the point: I want to buy a closed pair of cans for my mojo with a budget of 100£.
I like a balanced and clear sound, quite in the analytical side. For instance, I love my modded shure srh440 (but currently not with me, since I'm staying in Uk for a year and couldn't bring all my stuff from Italy). Comfort is really important for me, keep that in mind.

Checking around for new/used/refurbished stuff I found several options:

-Beyerdynamic 770 (32/80ohm, which one in case?)
-Beyerdynamic t51p
-Soundmagic hp100 (pretty good deals for almost half the budget)
-Soundmagic hp151
-Shure srh840 (tempted, but I wanna try a different sound signature)
-AT40/50s
-Brainwavz hm5s
-Yamaha mt220
-Akg k550/612pro

ps: I already have with me a senn hd579 (ok, not exactly an analytical sound), so I'd rather try another brand.

I listen to a lot of different genres: from prog rock, jazz, blues to trip-hop and electronica.
Of course everything lossless.

I already know that with a really nice source, which the Mojo is indeed, I should probably take an higher range pair of cans but that will happen not in the closest future. Right now I prefer to have different, even though not excellent, sounds to switch if I decide to do so.

Anyway, thanks for any kind of suggestion/feedback!

Hi guys,
thanks for the replies.

So:
-takstar pros, really interested in them and quite curious to try them out. But, and there is a but, I'd prefer going through Amaz_n in case I want to return them (and also because I spend all day at work and I use amazon lockers for deliveries).
-Soundmagic, really tempting. I read a lot of reviews and seem to have a great price/value ratio. And as I previously mentioned, it's possible to find good deals for the hp100s.
-Yamaha, probably one of the most interesting ones. Also read a lot (the endless thread in our forum as well) but (I know, it's embarrassing) I hate to have long non-detatchable cables! Anyway, I'd love to try them, even though from other users the pairing mt220-mojo is quite boring for some reason. In case, do you have any experience of that?

Other feedbacks? :beerchug:

The good thing about the MT220's cable is that it is coiled and much shorter than it otherwise would be. (click for pic)

I owned three MT220s. I drove them with the Schiit Fulla and Chord Mojo. The Mojo is far more accurate, but in comparison, the Fulla is lo-fi in an exciting way. It's kind of obnoxious and very obvious that the Fulla's sound quality is a lot worse than the Mojo's, but the Fulla does have a bit stronger impact and such. I don't think the MT220 sounds boring with the Mojo.

I've owned a lot of other electronics, but didn't use them with the MT220. (Or just don't remember, since I used a ton of gear in the past.)

Not sure what gear you're using, but if you're looking for a DAC/amp/preamp for just $99, the Schiit Fulla 2 is decent.

Thank you very much for the insight.

As I previously said, I'm staying in Uk for at least an year and I couldn't take with me all my gear. I mostly listen with the mojo connected to a mac (audirvana plus and flac tracks). Besides, I have a zishan z1 and a Fiio x5 mk1. Absolutely not interested in portable stuff now, since I prefer to listen music during the night on my desk.

Anyway, I'm incredibly tempted by these yamahas. I read a lot of reviews, and everyone seems to agree that it's an incredible pick. Do you think that 95£ for a semi-new pair would be a good price? I also found a pair of MT5 (that according to a few reviews seems a really nice piece of hps as well) for half the price, and I was wandering if the difference in price corresponds to performance.
Have you ever tried to compare this yamahas with beyerdynamics?

thanks a lot!!

Yeah.

I also found a pair of MT5 (that according to a few reviews seems a really nice piece of hps as well) for half the price, and I was wandering if the difference in price corresponds to performance.

I owned the MT8 and did not like it nearly as much as the MT220.

Believe it or not, I think the ~$15 semi-open on-ear Koss KTXPRO1 is far superior to the MT220. (Along with every closed-back under $400 that I have owned.) And it scales nicely from the Mojo.

Have you ever tried to compare this yamahas with beyerdynamics?

Not the ones you listed.

Obviously already checked if available on amazon or ebay but.... sadly I couldn't find anything!!!! Thanks anyway for the tip, I will check again in the upcoming days.

Regarding the yamahas, thanks for the information. I am really tempted to pull the trigger.
