Well, my UM2 are here.

I ordered them seamesly from earphonesolutions.

Previously, I had a pair of E3c and also tried E4, which I considered a great sound, but ordered UM2 to try new sound signatures.

First impressions are this:

They have a rough aspect. Seems to be handcrafted. I hope this is normal.

The main difference between the Shure line is that they throw more sound outside. With the Shures, a co-worker never had haeared them. Now he does.

About the sound. Well. I suppouse they have to burn-in, so i hope sound will change a bit, speciallly in the highs.

Orange foam tips:

Low end is impressive, but mid and highs are not as crystal clear and enhanced as in E4. I have to EQ to listen them properly, I've never had to do it in the Shures. Mid range seems to be less defined, and in some synth pad layered tunes I can hear some ringing. I've never heared mid-ringing in the shures

About the soundstage, everything sounds bigger. Thats because the low end section.

I listen to trance, funky, electronic, etc. One of my worries was if the Roland 909 kickdrum whould sound as excelsus and punchy as in the Shure line, and it does. Bass and rythm section in electronic and dance music sounds big, great, magnificent and gigant. Well, also in the E4.

Tri-Flanges:

Well, the highs seems to raise and I dont need to EQ as much as with the orange foam tips. They seem to be a little bit rolled off, too. Yes, my reference song for this part is 'Jarmiroquai - Dynamite' and UM2 cant reproduce its highs as E4 does.

I've never inserted that huge white christmas trees. The worst part is extracting them !!

Yellow foams:

Highs goes better, not higher, but better. Thats right.

Conclusion:

Note that I am writing this with the IEM straigh from the box, and this are first impressions.

Well I've spent less than one hour with them, so maybe is to early to have impressions.

Bassically, great low end but I miss the definition and the perfect shape of the E4 highs and mids.

Tomorrow I will have here a pair of E4 and I'll do an A-B test, specially in focused in the high section

And in a week I will post another review and I'll tell if UM2 are better than E4 or not.

Congratulations on your purchase! Some say that a burn-in will definetly help the sound out, but anyhow, be sure to tell us how it sounds after the burn-in!

thanks for the review. it was actually nice to hear that it's not "perfect"...we often get totally unreasonable first thoughts on products and i like that you weren't impressed in some areas. i'm sure they will get better as they burn in...keep us posted.

b/c I'm looking to upgrade my ER-6i's to get more bass while retaining the isolation. I've been going back and forth between the UM2's and the E4c's for a bit now. I'll be anxiously awaiting your A/B comparision, and it'll probably have a pretty big impact on my decision

(no pressure).

Thanks!

I just got my Westone UM2 off a headfier here (thnx Imyourzero ), since it doesn't have many hours on them, I think I should let them burn in more too. But compared to the Shure e2c, I think

The bass extends a lot lower and has more texture, I picked up details that I couldn't before
The treble is back! it extends a lot higher than the e2c and has a nice forward sound

all my 192kpbs mp3 sounds like total crap now, they were listenable with the e2c.

I have the long and short comply and shure flex sleeves at my disposal, out of these, I prefer the short comply the best. The long comply tips makes the bass stand out a little too much and the shure flex does the same to the treble. I'll try get some tri-flanges and try the foam+flex sleeve hybrid mod.

Got mine today as well and I'm fiddling around with different tips while trying to get a decent seal. Turned the tri-flanges into bi-flanges already but the best so far is still the PM1k mod. Gotta give 'em some time to do whatever IEM's do so I guess I'll have more to say at a later date.
Figure it took the E3's 100 hours plugged into a source to start sounding good, I'll give these a week and see what happens.

Day 2:

I've been burn-ining them all night with pink noise and songs at a listening volumne level and there is a little improve in the highs, but they aren't still like the awesome liquid texture of the Shure E4.

With UM2, there are songs that sound like crap and others sound like glory.

There isn't definition in the mid range. Vocals and instruments are not aislated.

I have to EQ, raising +1 db in 6K, and +2 in 12 and 14K and +1 in 3KHz. (Winamp). I hate EQ.

Bass section is truly unveliable, best part of the IEMs.

Tested by the E4 owner, said exactly the same as me. (Some songs good, others not, rolled in the highs and mid section not as good as E4 one. Great soundstage)

Overall, a fantastic IEM with a sound signature more 'creamy' than technical. (I've readed this 'creamy' definition in one of the posts here and I think is the best way to describe its sound)

Tomorrow will have the E4 to make the A/B test.

Very informative!

You may find that the UM2 has an untapped "potential." They really work at their best with a complementary amp and good EQ; when I user iTunes and my Mac, for example, the sound is continuous -- as you put it -- "glory."

I agree 100% about sampling rates. Although well-defined stereo tracks will sound good no matter what, getting your songs sampled at 320 kb/s will make a clear difference in definition.

Visit my User's Guide for additional help. And enjoy your UM2s!
