Hi guys,

Ive been away for a while from head-fi.

I just decided to finish off my cmoy i started long ago.

The sound is alright but it goes from zip to full blast with a 2-3 degree rotation.

Im using a 50k pot. I forgot whether it was linear or log.

Which pot would be good to use with a cmoy?
I have it on a gain of 11.

If you're using a linear pot, that will give the effect you're hearing. With a log pot, the resistance to the input signal drops slowly for most of the rotation of the knob, but it drops faster and faster the farther you turn it. By the last 1/4 or so of the rotation, it's dropping quite rapidly. This matches the way our ears respond to sound, which is why it feels more natural.

There is a way to add a resistor to a linear pot to get a log-like response from it, but it has several disadvantages. Look for "linear shunt" in the archives. You'll find all the old arguments. Look at Headwize as well; I think most of the discussion on this topic happened over there.
