Anyone use this op amp for a headphone amp?

Heres the data sheet...

http://www.alldatasheet.com/datashee...I/TL074CN.html

My brother wants to use this chip in a 12 volt variable gain headphone amp circuit.

Can someone help me with the data sheet?... help me interpret all the specs and details?

Would this be a decent candidate? are there good amps / preamps that use this chip?

Thanks! all comments welcome.

That's the 4-channel part of the TL07x family right? If so, Tangent has a few unkind things to say about it: http://tangentsoft.net/audio/opamps.html (towards the bottom)

From what I've heard (haven't actually used it) it is a serviceable opamp with some commercial use (I seem to recall that some mixer boards use it) but nothing special and easily bested by any of the more common opamps used around here.

Some argue that it is perfectly fine for audio-equipment (the "any opamp is way better than it needs to be for audio" camp) but most dislike it.

Probably nothing severely wrong with the tl074 into line-level loads but into headphones? maybe not so great.

what sort of help could you possibly need with the datasheet? go ahead and ask.

Socket it. If it sounds lousy, you can get opa4227, 4132, etc, pretty easily, and they're pin compatible.
