my shure e 500's cord is splitting right where the right ear cord bends over the top of my ear! i've only had these about a year, i bought them from headphone.com. i take extremely good care with my things and these were placed in the case whenever they weren't in my ears... has this happened to anybody else? these things are expensive, and if they break after only a year of use that's pretty crappy. what can i do?
any suggestions would be appreciated...

Yes, it's happened to many people, and there is a long thread here about the issue. Go to the Shure website, download the return form, fill it out, and send them back. Shure will replace them.

I might even be in the market for one of these. One split cable on another Shure left me ice cold. It would only be a matter of time before one of those thick, rubbery cables went south.

Those braided Westone cables would solve the problem completely.

Why? If it happens Shure will replace them for free (and I doubt the new ones will have the same problem.) Stuff happens.

The Shure cable has also been implicated in loss of sound in one or both channels. If you're the kind of person who winds up their IEM, or has an accident, the cheap rubber almost guarantees product failure. What if it goes south after the warranty period ends?

Braided cables rarely have this issue. They're strong, and extremely flexible and comfortable. I might get a Shure if it came with a braided cable.

thats true westone cable does rock, thin and strong. I would think shure would radically change their cable design since there have been so many reports of problems but they seem to be happy tweaking it.
