Hi Guys,

I'm a newbie to the headphone scene. Been a musician for 20 odd years playing jazz & R&B, but listen mostly to classical / movie soundtracks at home on my Marantz/Dynaudio system.

Just about to start a new job working from home so was thinking os getting a good desktop system. Have tried only a few headphones as I'm living in New Zealand and good gear is hard to come by.

My upper limit on a set of headphones is the US$1k mark. My main criteria are comfort (not too heavy as wanting to listen for long periods ), especially wanting limited / no clamping around the head; a detailed, clean, wide soundscape but with a little warmth - no harsh or bright trebles, a solid lower register that's inbalance, no booming bass, an even balance across the spectrum.

I am currently looking at GS1000i (or RS1i?), HE500, & LCD-2's, or perhaps AKG 712 but have only had the opportunity to hear the RS2is which were nice, resonably comfortable, good tone but it was only a 5 min listen.

Have been emailing Mike at Schiit Audio and he suggested the Asgard 2 / Bifrost Uber USB for GS1000i which was my first choice. Another Hifi store had suggested I use the Woo Audio WA7 as the Schiit Audio combo would be too bright with the Grado's.

Can any one provide any assistance / advice on this one?

I'm open to other suggestions but the amp/DAC needs to be in the US$1k region as well, so all up around the $2k mark. I am a bit of a perfectionist regarding my listening to music so like to get it reasonably right the first time (if possible!).

Well thanks for your time and looking forward to hearing from the 'experts'.

Bump!

Would be great to hear from someone... Anyone who has heard the Grado GS1000i + Bifrost / Asgard 2 combo or anyone else who has an opinion on which headphone is best for classical as I described above up to the $1k mark...

Also whether anyone has had their phones re-cabled by Moon Audio - was it worth it for sound improvement? Would it be worth considering for my budget?

Thanks again
Matt
