Help: When you have HD600+MG-Head OTL, what will you buy next with budget $140?

Hi,

Since I already used some of my budget to buy a new soundcard, and now, I still have $140 left in my wallet. What should I get next to improve my system? I have 2 choices:
1) Art DI/O from fullcompass
2) Cardas headphone cable

which will improve my sound system the most?

I would do one of the following:

1) Use the $140 to get CDs
2) Depending on your source, I may save the $140 and get a better CD player when you get more money.
3) If your source is good, I'd start saving money for the Orpheus.

Getting a DI/O means you'll also want to have it tweaked... another $260.

Tube Rolling? It's not on your list but it should be considered.

What sort of tubes are you using with the MG Head?

A different set of tubes can make it sound like a new amplifier.


Isn't the headphone cable upgrade considered the last 10% performance upgrade? If you're using your computer sound card as a source does it make any sense to spend that much on the cable? A good cable isn’t gonna do much for a bad source.

Try to find the Sony DVP500NS it was just above your price range and if your using the soundcard for a source it will be a noticeable improvement.

If you think your source does not need upgrading, then go with the upgraded cables for the 600s. I have the 580s with Red Clous. Haven't looked back. If you have money left over then tube roll that MG Head. I have the Ei el484 and a Mullard CV4004 in my system. Very nice sound especially for jazz and classical.

Actually, I just bought a new M-Audio Dio 2496 soundcard, so that will be my source for my sound system. Also, I use Tung Sol and stock EL84 as my MG-Head tubes.

Seen like ppl want me to upgrade cable first

Go with the cable, you'll hear the difference (I know it was night and day to me). Down the line, get an ART DI/O.
