Help:Rega Saturn vs Cambridge Audio?

You know, I think we have to remember something, here.

Any CD Player (and component, in general) could deliver different results in different systems.

The chain of components in one's system, from source to loudspeakers ( or headphones), will greatly effect how the system will perform (sound), overall.

System synergy and good matching (of components) can make or break a system; regardless of the price range or reputation of any given piece of gear.

I have seen a lot of comments on the Rega Apollo, all over these internet forums. Some I agree with, some I don't. Some stated in a reasonable and objective manner (regardless if I agree with them or not); others......not so much. I've seen some people speak of the Apollo as if it were a piece of trash and other's speak of it as the best thing since sliced-bread. I suspect depending on one's system, it can be both.

Without a doubt the Apollo will not be the correct (or best choice) for a lot of people's systems. Then consider that we all hear things a wee-bit differently and have different preferences, tastes and goals for the overall sound of our systems.

I have two Apollos and in my systems they are sweet, musical gems. I also have a Saturn and while I still haven't been able to really break it in completely and log enough listening time; there's no doubt it is a superior player to the Apollo on some levels. But it does not make the Apollo seem like a weak, little brother. The Apollo in some systems, will deliver a nice helping of musical heaven. It is very addicting, seductive and engaging.

But in a different way from the Saturn. People with different tastes, different preferences and different goals for their systems; may not see it that way.

In my opinion, the best thing to do is figure out what your goal is for your system.

Audition, audition and audition enough components that offer up different sounds, so you can understand and know what it is you like and want from your system.

Realistically figure out how much time you will spend listening to your system and the duration of those listening sessions.

Figure out how you will using this system. For kicking back and relaxing? While you are working around the house or working on projects? For parties? Will you or anyone else be dancing around the room? For impressing your friends? A little of all the above?

Then, start looking for components which will match well (synergy) and deliver what you want.

Remember, just because a component or system delivers high levels of detail, neutralitiy, dynamics and punch; doesn't mean it will be a pleasant system to listen to.......for several hours or any extended period of time.

Listening fatigue can become an annoying problem, if you're someone (like me) who listens to music while working and for extended periods of time.

I've known and still know way too many people with expensive, highly-detailed, in-your-face systems; who are so proud of their status symbol systems; but can't stand to sit in their own listening rooms for more than 10-15 minutes listening to their prestigious, yet annoyingly irritating systems.

As neither can any of their friends.

So true.

In my headphone system with the Bada 12 (with a high resolution tube set up) and Sennheiser HD600 with Cardas headphone cable, the tone body (timbral) resolution is incredible - many shades of nuances in tones with a sweet but natural timbre. Great 3-D imaging with much empty space between instruments.

You can't tell a great component or cable unless you try it in a great system.
You don't have a great system until you have all great components and cables. Synergy plays an important role, also.
