Hi...Brand new to the site and looking for some advice on putting together a small headphone based set-up. I'm new to the world of headphone gear, but have been into audio a few years now having done a lot of research to put together a decent Marantz/Focal/Rythmik theater set-up for movie watching (mainly learning from the AVS forums). Now I'd like to get mid/hi-fi personal sound with the components fitting on an end table/night stand. I'm guessing this has been asked before (and if so feel free to just direct me to the right thread), but didn't see anything after a few days of searching and reading. So, starting from the source what are your recommendations for equipment with a total cost around $500? Here's what I assume I'll need:
Small CD player (prefer this since I don't have my whole collection stored in full resolution to a hard drive)
DAC (any reason for this if the CD player has a decent DAC?)
Headphone amp (definitely need this as I don't have a small integrated amp or AVR sitting around)
Headphones, obviously.
As stated above I don't need the set-up to be portable, but it must also be small and unobtrusive enough to fit cleanly in a living space (aka my wife doesn't notice it).
Bonus question: Are there wireless headphone systems that are as good as wired? This would allow me to put an integrated amp + speaker system together then listen to headphones when necessary.
Thanks for the advice!
