Hi, first post.

I'm in Toronto, I'm looking for an inexpensive cd player, amp, and headphone set.

I need gear that can be purchased online.

I was looking at an Oppo 970 as my source,

Project Headbox MK II as my amp

Headphones I'm looking at are AKG K 26 P's, Sennheiser 280 pro's, Goldring Dr 100's, Grado SR 60's (although I'm not sure I can buy these online)

Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated, I'm not committed to any particular brand or anything, don't care about looks, or saving space or portability, or comfort, just looking for some cheap good sounds for my little office cubicle

thanks in advance

Just from looking over that source I think it looks like a killer deal. I would just make sure people give it good reviews. It's good for upgradability too if you ever choose to add a dedicated DAC. I might get this!

As for the amp, I'm also not really sure, but it has the power for that pair of 280s you mention, and the dual rca input is I guess the minimum requirement. Imho, the amp is the least important component, so be sure to adjust your spending accordingly -- but yeah, L&R rca inputs are generally found on desktop amps, and those are generally over 100 dollars, so you've found a decent deal I think.

All of those headphones are good starters. The Grados are available in Canada but they overcharge. If you can take a trip down south you can get the SR80s for 95 which run for about 150 here. You can also look into the MS1 -- comparable to the SR125s by what most people say for 99 american shipped anywhere in the world. It really comes down to your music, what do you listen to?

SR60,PA2V2 amp, and whatever CD Player you want, preferably with a line out for the amp.
They say that amp works well with Grados.

There are also other amps. Look at head-fi sponsers.... C&C Box+ is supposed to be good for $109. Ill know in a few days when i have mine.

Also someone is selling amps for $60, and i just woke up and cant remember... oh, the V6 ummm.. someone will chime in and say it. I have to wake up...lol.

The Go-Vibe 6, a decent little amp. I have the 5, and I have to say it is good for the money. With these low impedance, lower-end headphones you don't need the best amp.

This all depends on how portable you want your system to be. If it's a desktop system I suggest you go for the amp you found or something similar.

Speaking of the (headphone)V6.....yeah; could be.

....Sony MDR-V6, that is.

They're closed and wouldn't be as likely to bother others around you, and they're really tough and can be tossed in and out of your desk lots of times with less chance of damage. They also work well without an amp.

EDIT: Yup; caught that DragOn; changed it; thanx.

The V6 should be closed, because the V6 we meant is an amp,not headphones.
Thats the amp i meant in my last post. I wasnt awake yet. Ok,,shower time..lol.
Go Vibe V6, now im going to want one of those also...oh geez.

IMO, I think that for headphones the way to go is the Senn HD280pro. They are closed and have a great sound for the price. I own the grado sr-80's and the senn hd 280pro's and i think that the senns are the better buy. as for amps, I also think with the 280's that an amp is not necessary to start off with. but it does benefit from it.

surprising no one has suggested the legendary Koss KSC-75 heh. If a clip-on phone and sound leak is not a problem for you, then I think the KSC-75 is the best bang for buck phone. Sacrifice a little soundstage and you have a very cheap SR60 IMO.

Hi there.

I have an oppo player, but I've only used it as a source at the toronto meet, so I can't say too much about it's quality as a source. It's a good DVD player though

If you are thinking about SR-60, I would recommend checking out the Alessandro MS-1 too. With the exchange rate as it is, it's possibly cheaper at $99 US (free shipping) than what you would pay for an SR-60 + tax at, say, bay bloor radio, and I personally prefer the MS-1 to the SR-60.
