I've got a 4G Imod. I was always been using Ver 1.2 and iTune 4, all of which came with the original package from Vinnie.
Downloaded iTune 7 this morning and plug in my Imod, as expected iTunes wants me to upgrade the the version of my ipod.
I did but suddenly it said unexpected error on iTunes and my Imod was frozen with the folder icon

So i had to restore my imod. Managed to get it to ver 1.2.1 finally but all my songs were gone.....sigh......

Then when i tried to re-transfer musics to my imod, it says it cant write data on my ipod

iTunes - don't use it...

Not being a smart arse, my personal opinion is that iTunes causes a lot of unforseen issues for alot of users. There are loads of other options out there that do it better - just depends if you are willing to find the one that suits you...

Media monkey is one other option

Just so you know, this should have nothing to do with the fact that it is an IMOD.
But yea, Good luck.

I hate when they come out with new "better software" and it messes people's old things up.

Totally agreed !!! But since its free....cant really complain.

Updated to iTunes 7.3. All problems fixed but lost all my music

Have to rip from my CD collections again this weekend ....sigh ....

So for those who wants to upgrade to 1.2.1, make sure you back up all your data before you start !!

One funny thing was, i rang up apple customer service when i had the issue. They said since my unit is still under warranty, if i bring my unit in, they will replace me with a new one !

No way i am giving up my iMod for a ordinary ipod !!

Errors can happen, since we are talking software.
But its nice to see that you got it up and running again, with a fresh firmware.

This time back up your music. Cause you probably don't want to re-rip one more time..

First of all... it is NOT 'free', secondly - how much is your time worth to you? Are you really happy to shrug your shoulders and happily rely on the oh so wonderful iTunes to thrust its way into your rectum once again???

Consider the frustration you have experienced and consider that there may be a solution out there that better serve you, pretty colours and all

Of course i was really pi**ed off when that happened. What i meant was i didnt pay for the stupid iTunes. And it was me that decided to update the iTunes+ipod firmware out of sudden where i could live with older firmware. So cant blame anyone..

Rockbox seems like the solution for this but due to the extremely short battery life, i rather stick with the orginal apple firmware.

Lesson to learn --- ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR MUSIC !!

I think there are more lessons to learn here...

If you bought an iPod, you bought 'the stupid iTunes'... but that does not mean you have to use it.

Rockbox (whilst I highly recommend you use it for very different reasons) has nothing to do with helping you avoid what has happened here. If you had software that was reliable, that you knew you could trust, your iPod would be the backup that you mention (unless your library is bigger than your iPod can store).

Battery life is no different using Rockbox vs apple firmware whilst playing back the same music format. The battery life is more demanding on the device due to lossless audio requiring more drive access than compressed audio (like MP3).

Long story short you need to try some decent software. iTunes has its place (allegedly), but you will not experience these (and other problems) with well written software.

Check out Rockbox to begin with, play with FLAC files and see if you like them. If you prefer MP3, try Xplay for simple drag and drop.

Keep away from iTunes because it will piss you off again in the future...

And for god's sake if you don't listen to any of my advice, make sure you eat something (especially the waffles) at 'the store' on Melbourne St, Adelaide... very tasty

No, no, no. Since the files on the iPod are the ones being used every day, they can hardly constitute a 'backup'. CDs are a backup for the files on the iPod, but not a very accessible one. The bottom line is that all DAPs are brittle things which should always be backed up.

Again, completely wrong. Battery life using Rockbox is typically 1/2 to 2/3 that of the iPod firmware, depending on your setup and habits, using the same files. I really wish battery life with Rockbox compared with that of Apple, but there's been little or no progress there for a long time.

Battery life is much shorter with rockbox thats for sure. Try it and you will know. I only play lossless, FLAC on rockbox, i think 4 hours the most.

Are you from Adelaide ?
Haha....i will check out "the store" next weekend

Thats exactly what i was talking about. Thats why i rather stick with the apple firmware.

Thought my short battery life was specific to FLAC file access, not rockbox. Thanks for putting me straight.

I understand what you are saying in regards to using iPod as backup Mr Flower, and whilst I agree - still think it is a good way to backup on a budget. iPod is used as the daily player, PC is the backup. Unlikely both sets of files will die at the same time...
