I'm looking for an open pair of headphones to upgrade from my M50Xs, I'm buying in the UK and I'd put my budget around £200 ($310). I've looked at the HD600 and HD650 quite extensively but they're just out of my budget plus I don't think it'll stretch to cover an amp too. At the moment I'm looking at the AKG K702s and HD598s.
My first question is would the FiiO E10K be good enough to drive the AKGs? My second question is whether anyone can recommend some alternatives to these two headphones?

I generally listen to rock/metal such as Radiohead, Metallica, Foo Fighters and Dream Theater using my laptop which i guess doesn't have a particularly good built in DAC

My advice would be: get second hand HD580/600 in very good condition for cheap and with the money you have left, you could buy an O2 amp.

I once bought a HD580 with a Musical Fidelity X-Can V3 for just €200. You might not be that lucky, but there are great deals if you look for them.

PS: I found a HD580 in mint condition in my country for €125. Another one in lesser condition will probably sell for just €90.

Wait for a sale or find the HD600 used. At the end of day you will be much happier. If you look in the for sale section here you should find something.

The Philips X2 directly competes  with the HD650, is cheaper, doesn't need an amp & would play better for the music you listed.

Check out akg k712. Great headphone, wide soundstage. Nice bass, fits your type of music as well. I prefer it over x2. x2's bass is a bit sloppy, cymbals sound artificial at times.
